Cancer

Abbey was diagnosed with cancer of her paw and had to have her rear leg removed. She is doing well but struggles to run and play since she is an older dog and a bit overweight. We have her on a diet now and give her Deramaxx for her arthritis. She was depressed at first but we try very hard to treat her special.

We adoped a year and a half old English Springer Spaniel who tries to play with Abbey. Abbey is trying to play but still gets tired and is a little bit jealous of the new dog but they get along very well since Abbey is so tolerant. Her personality is just to loving. I hate to think this is the twilight of her life. Our new ESS is named Dakota Josephine or Kody Jo for short. (since her previous name was Oreo) Abbey is teaching her so much and her personality is much like Abbey. Midget
AKA "Maggot", tries to be the Alpha dog though. But everything is great with our three dog household.

Auto-immune disease

Somehow Abbey has contracted an auto-immune disease and spent 1 week in intensive care at University of Tennessee Veterinary Clinic. We never knew a disease like this existed but found that it may be more common in the Spaniel breed. Abbey showed no symptoms of any illness except she got a bloody nose. (Her blood plateletts were so low they thought she may bleed to death internally.) At first we thought she may have bumped her nose while playing ball but the next day she got another one.

We had to put Abbey on prednisone which is a steroid and several other medications which she has been on since July. These medications have caused her to get a urinary tract infection and an ear infection which we are fighting now. She also has to have her blood count checked weekly. The steriods have caused Abbey to eat everything in sight. I'm afraid if we leave her alone too long she's going to eat her doggie sister Midget!!!! She NEVER in 6 years was a trash rummager but now we have to put the trash away where she can't get it because she is constantly seeking food. In fact, we left an apple pie on the dining room table and she ate the whole pie while we were away.

We are praying that Abbey will eventually get better. Friday, October 13th, we take her to our vet again to see if her CBC is better. If so, maybe we can ween her off the medications she is on. Only God can help her. Please pray for her with us.

My Trip to Florida

Mom and Dad took me and Midget to Florida for Christmas. We had fun in the sun. It was warm and I like that. We stayed in a place next to a zoo that had lions that roared all night long. It was scarey for a little while but I got used to it. We drove in a big motor home and stayed in lots of campgrounds that liked us. We got to see many things and had lots of fun. I like it better at home because I can run and not have to be tied up when I'm outside.
