Arrival Story:
Prior to his death, my husband and I adopted a chihuahua, as a friend for our senior chihuahua, Aian, who is now 19 years young. Her name was "Tia". A show champion, she was put up for adoption, by a woman in Mesa, who will give you a chihuahua, past show, provided you spay or neuter the dog you adopt. Sadly, Tia was only to be with us for three years, having suddenly become ill with a rare form of blood cancer. She was a little angel, who would cock her head to one side, when you spoke to her, and was a devoted friend and companion. She is a part of my memory and heart, forever. Mourning Tia's loss, I felt it was too soon to adopt another dog, as a companion for Aian, but I was told that chihuahuas really need to have a companion, and without Tia, Aian would pine away. My late husband, who passed away, last year, at the age of 40, from bone cancer, told me, prior to his death, that we must get another mate for Aian...and, so, we returned to the woman who had given us our first gift. We had called her and told her about Tia, and she told us that we must come, right away, as there was a chihuahua that we must see. Walking into familiar territory, with tears in my eyes, I was unprepared for what I saw...a very tiny little girl, another show champion, named "Creamed Soda". I, instantly, fell in love with her, and she with us. Tia could never be replaced, but when you love animals, as I do, one's heart, and home, can always be opened to loving another little soul. So tiny, and she devoured every little bit of affection, this little soul who had been shown, in competition, never known how to play with a toy or respond to general commands...but just a trophy amongst trophies. I sat down, holding her in my lap, looking into her beautiful eyes, and told her, "We only want to love you. You don't have to show anyone how special you can be, again, because you are and always will be to us. Creamed Soda had become "Zoey". One year later, we, almost, lost Zoey. She had, always been content, to sit on the sofa, while I prepared dinner. One evening, for a reason I still don't understand, she decided to jump off the sofa, and then I heard a cry of distress I never wish to hear again. We rushed her to the vet, only to find out that our vet was on vacation, and the vet who had taken over, in his absence, did a quick examination, in the back room, and then told us that she would need an operation that would cost $3000.00...and he could not guarantee that she would live through it. He never, fully, explained what was wrong, but managed to supply us with opiates, to alleviate her pain, which I decided was not the way to go. I have been into naturopathic treatments for a number of years, and known about the miracles they could work...without the side effect of synthetic drugs and their side effects...or worse. I researched the web for a holistic or naturopathic doctor, on the web, and the only one found had taken his practice out of state... There was another, who practiced similar protocols, but was very far away...and Zoey need treatment right away. It was then I found, serendipitously, an animal hospital, in Ahwataukee, that used acupuncture....and a miracle it was, without drugs, without surgical procedures, four treatments later, Zoey, whose back legs had been paralyzed, was walking again. I, keep her, along with our other animal kids, on glucosamine supplements, and she now has the energy and stamina she had before the accident...and no pain. She has returned to her mischievous little self, the "protector" who will nip at the pants legs of strangers, and as soon as you pick her up, she will melt into you, cocking her head, and staring up at you with her big brown eyes. Due to being spayed, she is one of the chihuahuas whose body expands due to the procedure...but, to me, she is still the little girl I love, beautiful, perfect as she is, and loved for the herself and the unconditional gift of love that she brings to me each day. She is special. She is my beloved Zoey.
