Despite frequent feedings and close monitoring, Licorice suffered a hypoglycemic episode at around 10:00pm tonight. We found her barely responsive after being away from the home for only a few hours. Fortunately, we knew exactly what to do to bring her out of it and she was almost fully recovered within half an hour, although it felt like forever. Licorice will most likely become less prone to Hypoglycemia as she grows but for now she will require extra care. For this very reason, Mocha's puppies will not be available to forever homes where they will be unsupervised to extended periods of time.
If you have a small breed puppy or are considering adopting one, it is extremely important that you know the symptoms of Hypoglycemia, how to prevent an episode, and how to respond to an episode. Hypoglycemia is an emergency that can result in brain damage or death. There is A LOT of misinformation about preventing and responding to Hypoglycemic episodes on the internet so it's best to consult your veterinarian. Although many breeders recommend constantly giving small puppies sugar to prevent an episode, this is not only terrible for their overall health, it can cause them to become prone to Hypoglycemia.
