The Vet

I'm feeling all groggy today. The Management took me to the Vet yesterday. I dont mind the vet, he usually gives me treats, but let me tell you, yesterday something very odd happened.
This nice woman came and patted and petted me, she took my lead from my person and walked me around the room, being eager to please I walked with her, tail wagging to show that I'm not a scary dog - some people are afraid of dogs you know. Next thing I knew the woman led me through a door and away from my person! I looked back and tried to stop but she gentle pulled me through the door! The last thing I saw before the door closed was my person with that odd leaking eye thing humans do when their sad! I tried to go back to my person and gave a bark to call her but they just put me in a kennel and took my collar away! When the woman went back through the door I didnt see my person again but I heard the Management's voice.
I called and called but my person didnt come! I was frantic! After a while the lady came back and gave me something, I started feeling a bit sleepy then and couldnt quite remember why I wanted to bark. I went and lay down in the back of my kennel, other dogs came in and I heard some cats yelling abuse at the strange humans it was all very scary and upsetting. Another Retriever came in and he also tried to get back to his person but again the woman stopped him - I dont think she's as nice as I originally thought.
After what felt like a very long time another human came and took me through to a very odd room. It was all steely and smelled strangely - a bit like the toilet after my persons's cleaned it. They lifted me onto the table and I tried calling my person again but then this very nice man came, he scratched my ears and talked to me in a very nice voice before putting an odd mask over my face. I didnt like it at all but he was so nice and I was trying to be good in case they'd let me go back to my person if I behaved. I started feeling very sleepy then and after a few moments I decided to take a nap.
I dont know what happened but when I woke up again everything was hazey and confused. I heard the other Retriever whinning next door but I fell asleep again before I could ask him if he was okay.
Next thing I knew they opened the kennel and slid a collar on again. I was very tired but I knew my person would want me to be a Good Dog, so I stumbled after the strange smelling man. He led me through a door and there she was! My person was back! She hadnt abandoned me!
She wrapped her arms around me tightly and held me till I felt safe again. She talked to the nice man who'd made me sleep for a bit, then she and the management took me home.
I'm comfortable on my bed next to my person's side of the bed now. When I got home all I wanted to do was sleep some more and I fell asleep the moment my head touched my blanket!
I was so sleepy I didnt even realise I'd gotten a new toy! I've been chewing on it all morning!
I learnt two very valuable lesson though!
When taken to the vet - always expect a toy upon your return.
Once you find your person they will never abandon you.

For my first diary entry I have decided to reprint an interview I did with the local paper recently...

Reporter: How did you come to live with your current family?

Cowrie: For the first few months I lived with another family, they were pleasent enough I grant you but we always lacked that...certain connection.
Then one day my person walked in. I knew the moment she scratched my ears just right that she was the one I'd always been meant for. So, when she got ready to leave, I hopped in her car and refused to get out. Good things dont come by everyday you know, and when they do you should grab 'em paws and all.

Reporter: Is your new family very different from your old?

Cowrie: Oh yes! My person has a person, who is very nearly as nice as my person herself! The Management - as I affectionately call them - have no children so its just me!
Oh. And Izzard the cat.

Reporter: Do you get on well with the cat?

Cowrie: Absolutely! He comes and sits on my bed every morning and tells me all about his nightly exploits. He's quite a naughty cat! If the Management knew half of what he got up to they'd certainly have something to say about it!

Reporter: What are you favourite things?

Cowrie: Lets see. I love my morning jog. And my blanket - especialy when my person tugs rope with it! I love car outings with the Management! And a good run on the beach.

Reporter: What do you dislike?

Cowrie: Baths. The Mangement has a over fondness for what they call "hygiene".
I also dislike geese, squirrels and strange cats - in that order.

Reporter: If you could tell people oen thing what would it be?

Cowrie: Stick your head out the window. The simple pleasures are usually the best.
