Wet grass on her feet
My heart-dog, Sunny Delight, had developed liver cancer and had to be laid to rest on 4/25/09. I knew it was coming, but still, I don't believe one is ever ready. I posted his passing on the BF-L, a long time e-mail list for bichon lovers, and got a response back. There was a young girl looking for a forever home - preferably one without other dogs, where she would get love and attention.
I never really thought I would wait very long after Sunny's passing - we had 14 good years together, and I certainly miss him. But I like having a furkid in my life. Grieving continues, but I think not as much as it might if I were alone still - I have a feeling he would be very pleased. I know, had he been around to meet her, he would have been very happy with the Pixie!
So one e-mail led to another, to a phone call, and then another call...
The matchmaker was going to fly to my home to drive the four hours to pick up the little girl on memorial weekend. Due to other circumstances, the foster home decided to bring her up to me on May 3.
The picture I had seen of her looked a bit - scared? She was no such thing when she showed up - made friends right away, perfectly comfortable in my home, and her only fault, aside from the usual settling in issues, is her tendency to want to hunt other critters. (We have a houseful - cat, guinea pig, rats, lizards, snakes, fish...). So far we've settled the problem with all *but* the cat - who I think instigates it for fun, although he doesn't seem to like the consequences. She doesn't bite - just chases his slightly overweight self around a lot.
I miss my Sunny, but I don't think I'll have time to wallow in grief- the Pixie has landed :)
We've been to one playdate, and will soon be evaluated for puppy daycare. I have also made some inroads for obedience/rally-o and maybe agility training. And therapy work- she's very sweet, and small for her age at 10 pounds - perfect for therapy, if her temperament bears it out.

Mom has me a little worried - she is talking about going on a vakashun, but I don't know what that is. She says it lasts for a week...I think that's the time inbetween my normal school days.
She can't take me - she explained that she is flying somewhere, and I suppose her wings would get tired if she had to carry me too. (I never see the birds outside carry anything when they fly). We haven't been apart but one night since she became my forever mom, so I don't know about this...
On the other hand, my dogschool (Dog Day Every Day) right down the road will let me stay there. Suzanne, the owner, has an apartment set up there, and when me and the other kids need to stay for a while, she just "moves in" and we live like we're at home. We get to play all day and in the evening until "lights out" when we can find our favorite place and sleep for the night. And in the morning, all the other "day school" dogs come back to play some more. At least I don't have to sleep in some dinky cage.
Otherwise, life has been pretty good. Mom gave me treats on my birthday, and the school took my picture with my special hat on. Mom likes fall weather so we go out and walk more and do things. Only she really, really likes to take pictures of me. I suppose a princess just has to put up with the papparazzi...
Well, I'm going to take a nap - Mom will be home soon and will want her computer back.
Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes and cards, and to Maddie Mae for the cupcake! Yum!

I got a special treat today - Mom stayed home from work and spent the day at home with me. That was nice - we slept in late, and we went for a short car ride to put that evil-smelling stuff in the car. And then we went and got a chicken sandwich for lunch - I like chicken!
Then the neighbor girl came to take me for a walk, and when I got back, I chased the cat for a while. Mom cleaned her guinea pig, Hoshi, and he got out of his holding pen while she was working on the cage, and ran off, so I had to go track him down and show her where he was. The cat was watching too, but Hoshi is kinda brave for a guinea pig and he doesn't let the cat push him around. He likes me, tho.
Then I played that funny "watch me game" with mom, and now she's at her computer and I'm going to take a nap until bedtime. Night, diary!
