Arrival Story:
I wanted a large, wolfy looking dog and since my husband and I lived in an apartment we had to follow the apartment guidelines on chosing the breed of dog. We talked to the Apartment office and they told us specifically no Pitbulls, Rottweilers, or Dobermans. No problem. I started my search at the local pounds and shelters and the current lot of dogs were all mixed with the restricted breeds. I ended up visiting a Breeder in Braidwood, IL. He had a bunch of puppies and they were cute as buttons but then he showed me the two older pups they were going to keep. There she was in the cage with her solid black sister. I thought she was beautiful. The breeder said he would give us a discount on the older dogs. I brought my Husband back and we looked again at the puppies and then at Ruby and her dark sister. Joe wanted her sister but Ruby wouldn't have it...she walked right up to my husband while he was petting her ebony sibling and pushed right in and took all the loving and attention for herself. Joe couldn't dare choose Ruby's sister after this blunt display. We went to the Apartment office just to double check with the head honcho, Jim and he told us there was no problem with us getting a German Shepherd...YES! We put our deposit on her immediately. Joe went to pick her up soon after. We had Ruby for one night and we were head over heals for her. She was everything we wanted in an apartment dog, quiet, well behaved, easy to train. The next morning we went to the Apartment Manager, Jim, to set everything down in writing. Jim completely changed his story saying she wasn't allowed and we should just give her back to the breeder or to the pound. We didn't know where this came from because we had talked to him specifically and made sure everything was all ready for us to bring her home. Unfortunately he was unshakeable even though we had all the paperwork proving our point. So, Ruby went to stay at "Grandma's" House for a week and we left the Apartment complex...a very expensive decision I must add. But you do extraordanary things for the ones you love.

Bio:
Ruby is a Black and Tan long coated GSD with Blanket back Markings. Her facial marking is called a reverse mask which we love! She carries the Pure White, Pure Black, and Sable genes which in my opinoin makes her incredibly special even beyond her talents. She is 26 1/2" at the shoulder making her larger than Breed and Gender AKC standards although she is small to me. She is truely an exceptional girl.

Defying the conventional meaning of the word pawpular, Ruby can't scratch behind an ear without it being reported and talked about. Ruby leaves pets of the opposite sex blubbering and babbling nonsensically after each encounter, their cuteness and charm receptors bubbling over with excitement. Always one to entice a broad audience, Ruby not only loves to strut her stuff on the dogwalk, but digs every chance she gets to make a difference, adopt a pet in need or dish out for her favorite charity. 2. What kind of food do you eat? Timberwolf Organics and sometimes chicken and Meat and rice or Hard boiled eggs, yogurt...lotsa stuff really.

3. What are your favorite treats? Hot Dogs

4. Do you have a Valentine or significant other? My Momma's my best friend and I love my Daddy!

5. Do you get table scraps? Sometimes if I am good...no begging allowed in this house.

6. What is your favorite toy? Stuffies, Tennis Balls, my Wooly ball...no I'd have to say my Flying Monkey! You pull his arms back and he shoots away fast and makes monkey sounds. Duke likes him too. Once Duke peed on him so I wouldn't want him. Momma had to wash all my toys after that. Luckily the monkey still made sounds because if it didn't I told Duke he was gonna get Neutered the hard way!

7. When is your birthday? May 25, 2004

8. How many times a day do you eat? We have open dish feeding - when it is empty Momma just refills it. Maybe twice a day.

9. Do you have a favorite color? Red like Ruby Red :-)

10. Do you hope all your pals put this in their diary? Of Course I do but some don't and that's okay. We're still pals.

Entry 32: Running

November 8th 2009 11:07 am

Yesterday was fun and tiring. Here's an update on our Bike-joring trip. We were going urban mushing; we took the bikes to the bike trail but it was crowded so Dad suggested that we just run along side the bikes like we do for neighborhood walks. Mom unenthusiastically agreed and she hooked us up with our Walkie Dog attachments and off we went.

It was still tons of fun and a big workout. We got to go practically non-stop for miles. When we run around the neighborhood we have to stop and look both ways at every street so it is slow going.

This was more or less a straight trail no tight bends so we worked on "Gee Over" and "Haw Over" these are right and left commands for Passing another team or in this case biker. We did alright. It isn't something we get to practice often so Momma was very proud of us. Pops is still learning the commands himself because he doesn't usually come with us while we train.

Mom and Pops learned something kind of important on the run. Duke and I are both motivated by a dog in front of us. We would jog until one of us had to pass the other for passing bikers on the trail than the dog in back would speed up to a gallop. Unfortunately the lead dog was discouraged and slowed down so neither of us was galloping for long. Momma kept telling Dad we need to get a dog who is either motivated by being chased --BOL-- or LOVES TO RUN no strings attached. Momma is now trying to talk Pops into adopting a lead dog that is in advanced age and unable to race anymore. We do a lot of recreational running so it should be a nice transition for the ex-racer.

It probably won't happen anytime soon but we'll see. That's pretty much the whole thing. We all had fun; we all were extremely tired; and we all enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The weather was on the humans’ side - in the 70's. THIS IS NOVEMBER - WHERE'S THE SNOW! Momma had to take all her layers off until she was in a Diego T. Can you believe it No Sleeves in Chicago In November? This is driving us crazy. Bring on the flurries.

On the ride home we all go to Burger King. Duke and I both ordered a Bacon Double Cheese Burger with Ketchup and Mustard. We like our condiments. It was really good. We see why our buddy Demon Flash Bandit always asks for Burger King and prefers to live on it compared to kibble. Very Tasty!

That's all Folks,
Ruby Rocket
