Dear Diary,

Even though I am a retired racer, that doesn't mean I lay around and eat bon bons all day! You see, my mom is a very active volunteer with Greyhound Pets of America and is always trying to help more retired guys like me find loving, forever homes.

That is why I got so excited this morning when my mom said to me "Jake, do you want to go to work with me?" Now why she calls this work, I don't know because it is one of my favorite things to do! Not only does it involve a car ride, I get to meet new humans!

Me and my brother Carson kept running to the door and hoping mom would get out leashes out. Finally she did...and we did our happy dances. We jumped into the car (two big greyhounds will fit in a Honda Accord but we long for the day when mom buys us a mini-van!) and off we went. First we drove to a shopping center to meet our Aunt Kathy, who was going on the visit with us. Boy were we glad to see her and happily gave her kisses when she got into the car. Then we drove across town to a quiet street where mom parked. Of course, we had to sniff the bushes and felt it necessary to leave the message that we had been there.

Then, a nice lady came out onto the porch and greeted us. She told us how beautiful we are (as if we didn't know!) and invited us in. Now, being very nosy greyhounds, we are always interested in getting into someone's home so that we can sniff around and explore. There were some other nice people there, too. There was a 12-year old boy and his dad and his grandmother. All of the humans oohed and aahed over us, but being greyhounds, we are used to this. We allowed the humans to pet and love us but then I got sleepy and lay down to snooze. My brother Carson is shameless and continued making the rounds for more attention.

We stayed there for a while while my mom and Aunt Kathy talked to the new humans. I heard my name mentioned several times and cocked my ears to hear what wonderful things were being said about me. I felt very much at home and was content to just lay there. Carson does not have as much working experience as I do, but he seemed to like it there as well. The talking went on and one...finally I had to go over to my mom to let her know that all of this is very tiring to a retired guy like me and that I needed to get home for my nap!
We said goodbye to the nice humans and came home. And now, if you will excuse me, I must get my beauty sleep!
