Arrival Story:
A few days after Sabrina passed away, Errol, Shamu, Trishie, and I were still feeling very depressed. I had 3 puppies and 4 beds, 4 leashes, 4 food bowl and 4 water bottles. The empty one makes me cry all the time but before I can even think about getting another one to fill the void, a neighbor heard about Sabrina's death and gave me an orphan. He actually wanted to give me 2 orphans whose mother died giving birth to 8 pups, very rare in shih tzus. He was one of those backyard breeders who leave their dogs in cages all day, under the direct heat of the sun (goodness!). He has decided to stop his business (thank God!) as it was no longer profitable and he was selling all his adult dogs and puppies at very low price. Those which cannot be sold, he gives away for free to friends and neighbors, and these are good-looking, pure-bred St. Bernards, Rottweillers, and Shih tzus. He gave me 1-month old Roxy, a shih tzu, and 10-month old Donna, a St. Bernard. I took both for a minimal fee and a maximal thank you. I did not worry too much about Donna because I had a big ground where she can romp around. But I worried about taking care of a tiny 1-month old, orphan Roxy who is very timid, very withdrawn, and forced to live with 3 others, 2 of whom are very active and rough, Shamu and Trishie. I need not worry too much. She eats well and she had consistently firm stool even when I had to change her food abruptly (because she was being fed with left-overs from a hospital). Her tiny body and infant whimper evoked the maternal feelings of Trishie, who is also still a puppy herself. She took her under her wings and defended her from the rest. Shamu became her father and Errol, her best friendm (at last, Errol finally found a friend). She thrived and grew up. Now at 6 months, it is almost certain that she will not grow bigger than Errol. I have socialized her well, she is no longer as shy or as withdrawn as before. She is the smallest and the cutest and her play with Errol evokes the most smile from everyone.
