Arrival Story:
The first time I remember Cindy's scent, I was very small...I wasn't even getting out of the den very much yet. I remember she picked me up and held me under her chin, and I thought she had a really good scent with other dog smells from her . And I thought she was really really gentle. I remembered her voice after that too. Every time she came to visit after that I remembered her. One day, Cindy and her friend Ronnie Sue came, and Ronnie Sue and my grandma breeder Marti put me through all these fun exercises. Cindy told me later it was a temperament test. Me 'n all my brothers and sisters got to do it, but I had way more fun with it. I didn't even think it was a test. In the den at Marti's, I was known as "Miss Red" cuz I wore a red collar. I was also famous for getting out of the whelping box at 17 days old!

I am the daughter of Miss Ronnie Sue's dog, Byrt, and Ella, who belongs to our friends Don and Mary. My bloodlines come out of the CarrKees Kennel. I was the third Keeshond that Cindy has had. When I was young, we went to a lot of dog shows and had great fun with it. I have one brother dog in the Snow Pack, his name is Barney, he's a mixed breed terrier. I am a survivor of the Hawaii State Quarantine system. When we moved to Hawaii, cindy didn't have much advance notice and me n' Barney had to dog it out for 120 days. My Cindy's very active in dog stuff, she's competed in agility, obedience, confirmation, she's worked on tracking tests and water dog tests, she used to be a CGC evaluator. She works full time as a system engineer for a defense project but she also has a part time job as a pet nutrition specialist.

I can scent mountain lion...although no one including me realized it til the big cat came and attacked our sheep...but the day before, I had found scent down in the grass...so Cindy and I went back to that place and she said she could see where the cat had lain...so then she let me go and I kept my nose to the ground...found where it had stalked, and even where it had climbed the embankment and the fence to get the little sheep. I busted that mountain lion totally...showed Cindy where it waited near the water trough, where it went through the fence...and he ain't gonna get through there no more. And the sheep are staying away from the water trough at night now. The Alpaca even come and put themselves between the water and the flock...everybody's on to that cat for now. He might think of something else but it's gonna be awhile. And NOW I know what that scent means and I'm gonna be on high alert.

A grim morning walk...

For the past week or so, me n' Barney have smelled something very different and odd up the driveway...whenever Cindy would take us for our walks, we'd find it...weren't sure what it was, we would both investigate it until Cindy got tired of waiting and we'd have to go on. Me n' Barney talked about it all the time...we knew it wasn't any of our yard cats, and it wasn't like coyote or raccoon, which we have smelled before...

And then this morning, going out the long driveway, Cindy suddenly stopped abruptly and was staring uphill into the pasture...and we smelled blood...and all the sheep and the alpaca were way up at the top of the hill and did not come down to say good morning to Cindy like they always do...

And then, we all saw it...the small piece of brown and white fur and the piece of flesh...all that was left of the smallest sheep Cindy said...she recognized the color of the wool...

Our walk didn't last very long, we turned around back to the ranch and Cindy started making phone calls...me n' Barney were sitting there thinking we had to start really watching out for whatever this was...

Mountain lion. Cindy said it was a mountain lion, and later someone called a "game warden" came to our ranch and talked about it.

I bet we don't get a lot of nighttime walk time now...but me n' Barney are worried Cindy will go out by herself to check the sheep...
