So Mom was out workin' in the garden today, rakin' leaves and tryin' to do some clean up. She told me I had to wait fur her to throw the ball fur me. Although, later she found herself putting the ball in the chuck it stick and throwin' it fur me. She then realized she had not made a concious decision to throw the ball fur me at that point. It's not like that has nevfur happened befure. She now has an inkling of our places in the universe. When it comes to fetchin' I am a Jedi Master and she is weak minded fool! BOL!

Hello! Pepper's humom chiming in today.

Pepper loves her ball fetching. But not so much that she is aggressive about it. She's had some encounters with some not so friendly dogs, but nothing major. Just think she's decided balls and frisbees are safer and more predictable than other dogaloos. So her preference at the dog park is to focus on her fetching and mostly she ignores the other dogs. She is a favorite of the herding dogs. They love to herd her. And she's good with it too. Doesn't mind as long as they don't get in the way of her fetch. If there is a very pushy dog she stops running, drops her ball, lowers her head and lets them sniff her. Most dogs are satisfied and soon let her go on her way. She has never challenged another dog until this week.

There was a swiss mountain dog giving her a bit of a hard time. He'd let her get the ball but then not allow her to bring it on back. This went on a few times until she finally told him off! Her tail was wagging and anyone else would've thought she was playing with him. But I knew better. Pepper doesn't puppy play anymore. For the first time Pepper decided to stand up for herself. Think the reason is this swiss mountain dog is a puppy. Although he is about 3 times her size! She's finally figured out she's not a lowly puppy herself anymore. She will never be alpha dog. But she's confident and happy, so she shouldn't be omega dog either. I'm glad she was a little assertive. Although, the swiss pup was pretty much unfazed.

The other new development is Pepper is now willing to voluntarily leave the dog park. I used to have to hide the leash and sneak up on her. It seemed she was never ready to go. The other day while I was going to get the leash off the hook near the gate she followed me over and stood at the gate ready to leave! I was pleasantly surprised.

I think both incidents are signs that she is shedding her puppyhood. This is good but makes me feel a little meloncholy as well. My friendly, excitable puppy has become a sweet, good natured dog.

Gotcha Day Festivities

My Gotcha Day is tomorrow, but we celebrated today. It's just easier on the peeps to do it on a weekend. More free time.

Furst, I got lotsa fetchin'! But I get that every day, so guess that's just normal.

Then I got a bath. BOO! Even dogs who love water hate baths! At least, I do! But the bath was because Mom found a flea swimmin' in my water bowl and I had a bit of an embarrassing accident in Dad's truck (not going into detail on that).

So what DID happen in honor of my Gotcha Day? Wellwoof, I got some extra spawcial treats to eat and a glow in the dark ball. I really like my ball! We went out tonight in the dark and it was so cool to see. It was like I was carrying the moon in my mouth!

Gotcha Day Annifursary!

Today is my 2nd year Gotcha Day annifursary! My diary was not started on my original Gotcha Day so we are going to try to remember those times and get us all caught up.

On my original Gotcha Day in 2008 a man, a lady and a boy came to see me and my fur brothers. Me and my brothers all really liked people and swarmed all around them. We were all fun and friendly and cuddly. Wellwoof, somehow I got picked and got to go with the new peoples in the car. I did not get to say goodbye to my fur mom but my furst skin mom and sisters said goodbye to me and seemed very sad.

My new fambily had a little bed in the car fur me that, somehow, I knew was fur me. I sat in the back in my bed with the boy who is now referred to as ‘MY boy’. Drivin’ away from my furst house was the only time I cried or seemed scared of being away from my fur mom and brothers.

At my furever home, my fambily had a crate fur me to sleep in. I liked the crate and I use one to this day, although a slightly bigger one. But I really wanted to sleep under Mom and Dad’s bed! They thought this was pretty funny and they let me do it. Eventually, though, I grew too big to fit under there. So now I sleep in my big crate.

One of the furst things my fambily did was help me learn where I should go potty. It was NOT under the dining room table! Next we went to the veterfurnarian to make sure I was all nice and healthy. I was and am. Finally, we signed up fur training classes, where I got to meet and play with other puppies. My classmates were:
Scooter the dachshund (best pup to ruff house with)
Shadow the lab mix (fun girl & we looked a lot alike)
Daisy the pit bull (a bit skittish, but a sweet girl)
Abby the poodle mix (feisty little thing)

I liked my classes. We went every week, me and the whole fambily! My fambily thinks I was one of the smartest and quickest learning pups but they are very biased so they might not be that credible.

We spent pretty much that furst Gotcha Year in training classes. By my furst year Gotcha Day annifursary in 2009 we, me and mom, were workin’ toward the Canine Good Citizen test. I did not pass that test my furst time around but I passed it when I tried again a coupla weeks later.

Shortly after earning CGC we learned about Dock Divin’. And that is my favfurite thing in the world to do! I am glad my fambily takes me Dock Divin’!

Well, I think that helps catch us up to when I furst started my Dogster diary in 9/2009.

My Favfurite Things!

It was pretty obvious from day one that I really like water. I tried to swim in my water bowl with my front paws. Plus, I liked to blow bubbles in there with my snout. My mom asked me to try to do those wet activities outdoors, if you please. And now that I'm older I mostly do.

Because I'm a retriever my family thought I might like playin' fetch. When I was a small pup we started out rollin' a ball in the livin' room. If I ran off with it the game was over, everyone dispersed. So I soon learned to keep the game goin' by always bringin' the ball back to one of my peeps. Now we mostly play fetch outside and my peoples use a Chuck It stick to throw it far, which I like. But I sorta miss those times when the whole fambily got togefur to roll the ball on the floor fur me!

Of course, I like food, doggy furiends, all peoples, walks and sleep, too. But fetchin' and swimmin' are what really make life wonderfur! So I guess dock divin' brings it togefur fur me in the ultimate way. We are so grateful to the nice trainer lady who told us about dock divin'. Mom nevfur heard of it befure so it's unlikely she would've come across it on her own.

To close, here is my own chorus to the tune of the song after which this entry is titled.

Pools of cool water and dock divin' splashes
Dog food and dad food and bones in big stashes
Findin' the toy my boy asked me to bring
These are a few of my favfurite things!

Kongs filled with kibble and mid-air ball catches
Plush toys and rope toys and gates without latches
Chuck Its that make my ball fly with a fling
These are a few of my favfurite things!

Anypup want to join in with a few of your favfurite things? Please do!

Moose & Squirrel?

More like deer and bird! My diary did not get started my first Gotcha Year. So me & ma are reminiscing a bit this week. Here are a coupla happenings during that time.

During my furst spring I found a little baby bird was livin’ in our hedge. He was tryin’ to figure out how to fly. I thought him very infuresting and wanted to smell him real good. Mom yelled at me not to scare the poor thing to death. She pulled me away from him! Also his whole fambily was flyin’ around squawkin’ at me!

The next day, Dad told Mom I had gotten a hold of that little baby bird. She took this to mean I had hurt or killed him! Nooo! I just smelled him again! And gentle enough that he was NOT hurt! Mom was amazed because compared to him I was HUGE and being a puppy pretty klutzy. But now after two run ins with the little guy, my folks figured either I was very gentle or this li’l birdie was very tough. We saw him in the drive way a 3rd time and I went to go sniff him and viola! He flew away! Not very high and maybe not very far, but at least into the neighbor’s yard where he could have more peace during his flight trainin’. Maybe I motivated him to learn quicker! I just could not help myself! I really liked that little guy!

Another time I saw a little fawn who looked fun to play with. I went running towards him. His mama did not think playing with a dog was such a good idea. She turned around and chased me all around the yard! Mom and Dad stood around just kinda stunned to see this happening. Mom felt such admiration fur this mother deer but she didn’t want me to get my head or ribs kickedin, though. That mama deer finally stopped chasing me after I ran behind my mom & dad. She stood around and glared at all of us for a bit then walked off with her fawn. Whoa, killer deer! Glad I survived that one!

Shadow

My furst doggy furiend was our next door neighbor’s dog, Shadow. Shadow was about 1 year old on my original Gotcha Day in 2008. This was great! He was young enuf that he didn’t mind my puppiness, but old enuf to be a good, calming influence on me. Not to say he didn’t like to play! We LUVED ruff housin’ togefur!

Sadly, he was also one of my furst furiends to go to Rainbow Bridge. Shortly after my furst year Gotcha year annifursary in 2009 Shadow died. He was only a little over 2 years old. He hadn't been feelin' well so his fambily took him to the dogtor. Turns out he had a hernia and during the operation to fix it he died on the operating table. My fambily was very surprised and very sad. We thought we would grow up togefur and be great pals livin' side by side fur many years. This was not to be.

Dog Beach

I’ve been to a few dog beaches since my original Gotcha day. I remember the furst one, the Santa Cruz dog beach. Think it was sometime in February 2009, so I was about 7 months old.

I could tell right away this was a pretty cool place. There were lotsa dogs and they were all playing or running or fetching or just having some other dog good time! My folks brought along a frisbee & a ball fur me. I was having a good time fetchin’ when another dog came along and took my frisbee. That’s fine with me I like to chase too! I thought we would play frisbee tug until that dog turned around and GROWLED at me! Real mean, too! I don’t mess with dogs like that. He can have my frisbee. But his dad showed up with his frisbee and once he had his own he let me have mine back. But I did NOT want to play with that mean dog anymore!

Anywoof, it was a cold day and my furst time seeing the big water. Mom told Dad not to make me get wet. “OK”, Dad said. But the ball he was throwin’ fur me got closer and closer to the water each time. Until, “UH OH!”, Mom was watchin’ her little black puppy’s feet rolling upside down inside a wave. Both Mom and Dad watched with bated breath to see if I would survive or was I going to get swept out to sea!? Mom says if I got swept out to sea Dad would be swimmin’ out there to rescue me! Dad says he feels lucky to be alive after that incident! He thought Mom was going to KILL him! She thought he ruined the ocean fur me furever! I thought it was fun. I still love the ocean, didn’t get traumatized one bit. BOL!
