Hi Everyone,
Kia had her little surgery yesterday and is home with a bandage on her tail. So far she has been really good at not trying to get it off, and when I see her trying to get to it, I tell her NO and she leaves it alone.
When she had the collar on she stood like a statue for over an hour so we took it off.
We should know the results by Saturday hopefully.
Thanks for all of the nice thoughts and well wishes for Kia.
I've adopted dogs before but have never had such a great experience as I have with Kia. Dogster is awesome and Frank & Kim and Kim Z have been wonderful. In a few weeks we must plan to meet at a dog park so we can reunite Kia with your dogs. I hope everyone can come.
Thanks again.
Candy

Today Kia learned to walk and sit so others could pet her...
She learned to see a treat and not take it and then was rewarded with another treat in our other hand...
She learned to leave the treat on the floor and not get it and she learned to walk past the treat and "leave it".
There was a lady in the store who saw Kia and asked if she was a Rhodesian Ridgeback????
We did some research and agree that she may be mixed with the Ridgeback breed. Her back and tail have the markings of the Ridgeback and her tail looks like it is braided. When we saw the pictures of some of the Ridgeback dogs, it was like looking at Kia.
Look up the breed and let me know what you think.

Kia had her first class on Tuesday at Petsmart. She is the only dog in the class and we are so lucky to get one on one training.
She is learning the "clicker" training this week. We click and give her a treat each time she comes to us when we click and also "watch me" when she looks in our eyes for 10 seconds.
She is also learning to walk nice.
She is a great student and the teacher loves her.
Thats all for this week.

Last night we decided that Kia would spend the night at my daughters house so she would get used to being there and if we go out of town, we can leave her there for a day or so while we are away.
Kia has been there several times to play with Mia and they have a great time.
Karen has a picket fence which is about 3 feet tall.
About 8PM they were in the yard and the next door neighbor was talking with my daughter over the fence and their dog was behind their privacy fence crying to come out of the yard. Mia and Kia were standing by the fence while the neighbor pet them when all of a sudden Kia jumps up (from a sitting position) and leaps over the fence. Thank goodness the neighbor grabbed her right away and they got her back in the yard. They weren't sure if she was trying to get to the fence and find out why the other dog was crying or if she wanted to be by the neighbor or if she would have run off.
Needless to say, I picked up Kia and she could not spend the night.
Tom is out of town on business. I was really upset thinking she could have run off and upset that we won't be able to trust her not to do that again at Karen's house, so we won't be able to leave her while on a trip until we figure something out. Our fence is going to be 4 1/2 feet high. I hope she can't jump that high or we are wasting our money..lol.
Help.... I need the Dog Whisperer.

Kia has begun to resist coming inside after I take her out in the yard for her potty time. We still don't have a fence, so we need to walk her on a leash. For the last few days she goes outside but when we are beginning to walk inside, she tightens up and won't budge an inch to enter the house. She sits and no matter how many treats I offer her, no matter how much kind coaxing I try, she sits like a mule and nothing can move her. I have had to actually pick her up and carry her inside. This seems to happen after I get dressed and take my shower...I think maybe she associates me getting dressed and taking her out and putting her in the cage because I am leaving the house.
She is OK in the morning when we get up or late at night for the last outing. Or maybe she is mad that I am not taking her in the car for a ride. Any suggestions????

Kia loves the dog park. Tom has been taking her almost every morning and she runs and runs. Doesn't come when called though, so we are working on that this week. Going to take small treats to the park and she will get one every time she comes when called.
She has put on a pound or two and looks really good. All muscle.
I hope all of her dog friends are doing well and enjoying the nice weather (except for the rain today).
Hugs from Mia

I am not sure if anyone saw this article in the Daily Herald but I wanted everyone to read it. Things like this are so sad and when you read it you will realize just how important pet rescue groups are to dogs and cats. Thank God there are rescue groups who can save any animals from what this dog went through.

Kia is getting really good at going in the cage when we leave the house. We usually get a dog biscuit and then lead her to the cage. Today I got the biscuit and she went right in. Well, my husband got home first and took her to the dog park for the first time. He said she went inside the gates and had her tail between her legs and looked at him as if to say "what is this place?" Two or three dogs ran up to her and she took off. She ran around and played with about 10 dogs. The dog park has some wooded areas and she went along with other adults and dogs and walked on the trails. One big dog gave her some trouble but she growled and let him know she was not going to take any dog trouble and the other dog backed down.
She has a weird way of jumping straight up in the air when she is happy. Some girls went to pet her and then she jumped up so high that she was above the girls. Tom said she was kissing them and just happy.
Does anyone take their dogs to the dog parks? We have a really nice one in West Dundee called Schwitzer woods. It is an old farm where the lady died and left the land to the Kane county forest preserves. She was an avid dog lover. She has two fenced in areas for the dogs...one is 5 acres and the other is about 1/2 acre for small dogs.
There is a huge field and then some areas with trees and trails. It is near Rt. 72 and Randall Road on Sleepy Hollow Road. If anyone wants directions, please let me know.
the other park we went to this weekend is in DuPage behind the Pheasant Run and near the air strip. That is really nice too and one area is mulch so the dogs won't get muddy. Another area has a pond they can swim in.
Good night all.
Candy, Tom and Kia.

Kia is such a great dog. However, she seems to think that our bed, is her bed. We let her sleep with us, but she takes up more room than each of us can spare. She plops down in the middle and no matter what we do, we cannot move her. Push, shove, treats...nothing works once she has found her spot. Both of us have to hold on to our edge of the bed so we won't fall off! LOL She is a sweetie pie.
Last night we were watching Survivor and she got in the chair with Tom and curled up on his lap and stomach and fell asleep for an hour.
Her name should be Queenie because she is certainly the Queen of our house! LOL
