Arrival Story:
Rosie was found on petfinder.com. She was being given up by her owner along with another great pyrenees. We did some checking out on the breed before we got her. My husband is a "big dog" kind of guy. We decided we would get her. The lady could not give us much information on vet care, etc, but did manage to turn over her AKC papers. When we got there, Rosie was extremely thin, her hair was matted and she was half shaved. They started to shave her because her fur was a mess. Their shavers broke so they never finished. Her skin was fire engine red. They told us we didnt have to take her if we didnt want her. All while biting our tongues, we knew there was no way she was staying there, even if it meant us finding someone else who could take care of her. It was a long drive back to PA from NJ. Rosie gets car sick.......was not a pretty trip back. We made several stops to give her a break. Our final stop was at Petsmart. We knew we had to get some clippers, more skin sensitive shampoo amongst some other supplies. This poor girl was in horrid looking shape and we almost dreaded getting her out, but she really needed to stretch. We barely got in the door when we were stopped by the manager wanting to know what "the story" was with her. After we explained to him that we just picked her up and we stopped in to get supplies, he was more than willing to help us with everything we needed. He was ready to call the enforcement officer on us along with several other customers according to him. Apparently, several customers went up to him to let him know about her and he actually caught someone on the phone calling us in. Once he explained, then everything was good. Our vet wasnt even sure if she was going to make it. She got at least rinsed down with warm water to cool her skin everyday, she was eating and drinking and seemed very happy. In about 2 weeks time, she put on about 20 lbs and that was just from feeding her accordingly. We think she got pushed out of the way when it was feeding time because there were like 5 or 6 other pyrs in the area with her. It took my son and I 3 days to finish shaving the other half of her. We would get off large layers of skin that were like leather matted in her hair. It was horrible. She has since been a wonderful girl for the most part, minus knowing how to get into cupboards, the microwave and the stove! She does have some kind of skin condition that we just cant seem to get ahold of. About 4 time a year or so, she will just scratching, chewing, etc, until she bleeds, smells and loses all her hair from the rib cage on down and starts to drastically lose weight from all the scratching. We have finally decided along with talking to our vet that once she starts up again, unfortunately we are going to put her down. We have tried foods (now only eats raw diet) medications, shampoos, etc to try and help her nothing is working. She is suffering through all of this and we have decided it is not fair to her anymore. Even now since all her hair is back and she is back up to normal weight, the girl is on 9 benadryl a day to just try and keep her comfortable. She has become very protective of us and we think it is because we took her in, saved her and loved her!
