Arrival Story:
Mystic along with her brothers, Dante and Zeus, were rescued by us. They were in a litter of 15 puppies. They were actually bred by a guy we knew and his sister in law. Little did we know that the sister in law was more or less a puppy mill type breeder. Mystic and littermates made it into the newspaper http://ydr.inyork.com/ci_12085882 The guy we knew told us to bring the kids over so they could see the puppies. They were all beautiful. I knew there was a runt and asked to see it. It would be our little Mystic. She was absolutely beautiful. She was so tiny. We were under the impress that she did not have an eyeball in her left side. We also knew that being the runt there could be other problems. Since we had decided on Dante and also Mystic, we knew we had to set up a vet appt. As we were told that the sister in law who was suppose to be financially supporting these pups and mother had backed down and not taken care of them, so we stepped up to the plate. I picked up Mystic and her brothers on a Saturday afternoon and had their vet appt first thing Monday morning. Well we were told Mystic was 5 lbs 3 oz at 6 weeks of age, a little small, but she was the runt (and still very cute I might add :) ) She tested positive for hookworm and roundworm. We were also told that she had corneal ulcers and the one on her left eye made her eyeball rupture and now it was deformed. We were so upset. Along with the vet. It was suggested not to return her and her littermates back to where they came from due to their condition. So the animal cruelty enforcement officer was called the next morning. She came out, check them over and said for now they could stay due to animal cruelty. It was ultimately the decision of the state dog warden to make the decision if they could stay or had to go. In PA, pups cannot be away from their mother unless they are in a non profit facility. Since my vet had written a letter due to their medical condition it was fine for them to be away from their mother, we got to keep them. Last Friday, I made a call to a canine opthamologist because I wanted to find out how much it would cost for an initial visit, testing etc. Once I started giving them information they insisted we bring them (Mystic and Zeus) down asap. Well after figuring out to pay for this, we took them down. Seems Mystic has a condition called Micro-ophthalmous which means she has tiny eyeballs. She never had corneal ulcers like first diagnosed. They had to sedate her because there was no way for the vet to examine her without it. The vet said the left eye is so small, she couldnt even get a digital picture of it. The right eye was a bit bigger and she did a get a pic of that one and it was horrible looking. She has to go back when she is about 6 months and have it re-examined. If those eyeballs dont grow anymore, they are going to have be removed. So it is now just a wait and see thing. She is ointment twice a day until she goes back in. She is very independent, smart and knows how to use her other senses very well. She pretty much has the first floor of my house mapped out along with my back yard. She loves to snuggle with you. She was suppose to be a mama's girl, but somehow she is a daddy's girl and that is ok too!

Bio:
Due to high cost of the vet care we have been enduring with Mystic and her brothers, we are doing a fundraiser right now to help get them the care they need along with a chipin account. If you feel you can help, it would be much appreciated, if not, prayers are very helpful also in getting things done. These are very special pups who started out rough in the beginning and now we are just trying to make it right. http://rescues.chipin.com/3-rescue d-great-dane-who-are-still-in-need -of-vet-care
