Arrival Story: In February of 2000, my husband was watching the 12:00 news and saw "Bear" as their Pet of the Day. The news anchor mentioned that an entire litter (8) of Basset Hound mixed puppies had been brought to the shelter and were in need of good homes. At that time they were 8 weeks old. Immediately my husband called me at work and as soon as I got off we rushed to the shelter to find him. The lady at the shelter told us where to look and much to our surprise "Bear" was the last one left from the litter. He was absolutely adorable while he was sleeping in his little cage. When we walked in to see him our spirit was lowered as we saw a family looking at the same cage we were and one little girl was begging her mom if they could have this one. Luckily, her mom wanted an older dog and reluctantly the little girl moved to the next cage to inspect the others there. Immediately, I opened the cage door and grabbed "Bear", put him close to my heart and went back to the front desk. The lady at the desk was impressed with how quickly we had picked a dog out and after we paid and got our instructions on being new puppy parents we headed back to the car to take our angel puppy home. On the ride home, my husband and I simultaneously said to each other that we needed to stop at a pet store to buy his "supplies"...meaning TOYS!!! His first toy was a plush purple dinosaur that we named Barney, but Barney didn't last very long. We then figured out that he would tear up anything he sank his little teeth in so we had to start getting him lacrosse balls, tennis balls, etc. The name Bear was given to him before we even got to the shelter to pick him up. I used to have a Basset Hound a long time ago and his name was Teddy...so naturally with Bear being part Basset Hound we could have sort of a matching pair. We are truely blessed with Bear and couldn't ask for a better dog. He is very spoiled (i.e. sleeps in our bed under the covers, has his own chair to sit in). And despite the fact that we think he has a little pit bull in him, he doesn't have a mean bone in his body, except when he sees cats or squirrels or rabbits.

Bio: We know that he has a little basset hound in him because of the longer ears and the pointed out feet. His coloring is black with his front and hind legs a brendel color and a white stripe down his chest. The brendel coloring is common in the pit bull family, but his face has charasteristics of pit bull also. We've also had people ask if he is a lab because of the square head and being black. Not sure where the white stripe comes in , but in the white stripe there are black polka dots that could mean some dalmation. We have no idea and honestly we don't care what he is. He is our little angel puppy and we could never have asked for a better dog than Bear. Bear is now almost 5 years old...December 31st and of course we will make a big deal out of it and let him do anything he wants and have anything he wants. I will have many new toys for him also...so that he can tear them up :)

Well, today was pretty boring. Mommy & daddy had to go to work all day so I mostly just sat in my chair and slept all day. When they got home though I was very excited until Mommy punished me for eating daddy's shoestrings. But Mom, they were still in the package and I was just trying to help take the package off of them...I didn't actually eat the shoestrings!! After I gave mommy puppy love eyes for a while and wouldn't move from my chair she felt sorry for me and came and sat down with me for a couple of minutes. After the love, it was time to to go outside and potty!! I like to go outside when the other dogs aren't out there...I don't like them too much. There are 5 little yappy rat terrior dogs that live beside us, a German Shepherd that has an attitude problem that lives next to them and then in the house behind us there are 2 pit bulls and 1 long-haired lab mix, his name is Rocky and he's my best friend. All the other ones are either too loud or mean. Anyway, after I pottied I got a treat and then sat in the kitchen while mommy made dinner. Gosh that smells good. I just wish i could get a lick of it and I would be almost happy.
Well, dinner time is over and I didn't get anything...oh, the misery!!! I am now back in my chair looking out of the front door and thinking about taking another nap. It's getting pretty late. Goodnight.

Today I have had a very busy day. I laid in bed with mommy until 10:30. Finally she got up and so I then proceeded to take a nap on my chair looking out of the front door for a little while. I woke up when I heard some commotion coming from the living room so I got up and after I stretched and yawned I went in to see what the racket was. Mommy was wrapping Christmas presents for our family and...I KNOW WHAT I'M GETTING FOR CHRISTMAS!!! Mommy was just wrapping mine and before she was finished I snuck a peak. I am getting a new toy box for all of my toys. Wait...wait...wait. This is a set up. This thing has a lid on it. That means whenever mommy and daddy are cleaning the house they can pick up all my toys and instead of putting them in the basket that doesn't have a lid on it and I can go back in there and sneak them out again, they will be putting them in here and closing the lid. Oh goodness, I hope I can get it open with my nose. This is insane. I'm not sure I like this Christmas present at all. I better get a whole bunch of toys to make up for this. And why is she even wrapping it?? I can't open it so she's just going to unwrap it for me anyway while I sniff at the box pretending to like what I'm getting. I think I'm going to have to start hiding my toys better so they can't find them.
Well, after that blood pressure rising experience I think I'm going to go take a nap with daddy on the couch now that he is home from playing golf. I have my own blanket so that I don't shed all over the new comfy furniture. There's been some talk about what is going to be for supper, so in a little while I'll have to start begging because all I get is the same 'ole dogfood. How come I don't get any variety. MMMM...Taco Bell. Those are pretty messy...maybe they'll drop some on the floor and I can rush to get it. Of course, I'll have to look really pitiful and start drooling and then lay my head on the coffee table to wipe all of the drool off.
