His people, he loves his people. He also loves going for runs with his mom, tug, swimming - and anything that involves moving in a circle.
When his people are away.
A tug toy, any type of ball, the flirt pole, any type of ball, the Goughnut, and did we already mention a ball? :) Ya, Nico likes a ball.
Anywhere, the more challenging the terain the better and we don't walk, we run. :-)
Obedience, Nico is not much for traditional "tricks".
After we purchased a house with a large enough yard to finally get a dog, we began researching breeds. We had never heard of a 'Dutch Shepherd', but everything we read about them lead us to believe that it might be the perfect breed for us. My wife is an avid runner and wanted a running partner, we are avid hikers/campers/climbers and wanted a dog capable of following us everywhere we went.
We got in touch with a few breeders, made sure that a dutchie was right for us, and after choosing the right breeder (which for us was easy) we went to visit. The pups were only 4 weeks old when we visited, but it was obvious having met the parents and another dog from a previous litter that we wanted a dutchie for sure.
At 9 weeks, we made the trip back to the breeders and picked up Nico. He's been watching over us and following us all over since.
As a Dutch Shepherd, I have a ton of energy. My parents are training me in agility, personal protection, and now schutzhund, all of which are really exciting for me! For fun I play with my little brother Enzo, and quite a few Pit Bull dogs - who often times get a bad rap, but I find them to be agreeable and loads of fun! I run 6 days a week thanks to my Mom, and play about an hour of tug every day with my Dad. I have a large bank of commands and I adhere to them all. :-) I love to eat too! One of my favorite dinners is comprised of 2 raw bone-in chicken leg quarters, carrots, broccoli, pumpkin and dumplings! MMMMM Tasty! I like kibble too! At my house, we have 2 cats, and they are my buddies. I am really happy and hope that all pup's get as good of a life as I do. :-)

Well, this years DSO (The Roaring Twenties) was quite the event. We had such a great time, I wish they did this more than once a year because I don't want to wait until next summer to do it again. :)
It was the first time we took both dogs on a weekend long trip, stayed over night in a hotel (two nights), etc - and they both did spectacular. Aside from the barking every time somebody came in to their "house" (the hotel kindly put us near an exit so we could easily take the dogs out), they did great and had a great time.
Nico did really well in the competition too. He placed right in the middle of the pack, which is great considering some of the other entrants were police dogs, etc. We were very proud. He could have done so much better too, had we trained a bit more seriously for it, but that was our fault not his. :)
Next years DSO is already named, dates announced. Anyone in the area should definitely entertain checking it out, it's a great time.

Well, it has been quite a while since we've updated this I guess.
Nico did superb at the trial last year. Not only did he get his UKC Family Obedience title (FO), we were talked into trying our luck at the Protection Alert title (PA). Nico had only an evaluation for protection work, we had not done any protection training or confidence building yet, and he managed to pull it off. Barely, but he did pass and was awarded his PA title.
Since the trial, we've done quite a bit of protection training, as well as started attending a Schutzhund club in the area.
We are looking forward to competing in the Dog Sports Open in August, which is pretty soon. Guess we better go do some training. :)

We (well, my wife more so than me) have been working hard training Nico for the UKC dog sport trials this coming weekend. Nico has the skills to accomplish this, no doubt, it's just a matter of whether or not he'll put them all together for the trial or not. I sure hope he does. Should be interesting.
