Bio: Kiara's Story: Kiara is our Precious Little Yorkie Girl. ***KIARA'S LIVER SHUNT LIGATION SURGERY WAS PERFORMED ON 9/15/09 @ CORNELL UNIVERSITY COMPANION ANIMAL HOSP!! SHE IS RECOVERING BEAUTIFULLY @ HOME NOW!*** DR.S WERE ABLE TO "TIE-OFF" THE SHUNT VESSEL BY 80%! SHE ALSO HAD HER HUGE BLADDER STONE REMOVED & CORRECTIVE SURGERY ON THE BLADDER! HER KIDNEY CYSTS WERE NOT ABLE TO BE ALTERED @ THAT TIME. WE'LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR HER FOR THESE. KIARA HAS BEEN FOUND TO HAVE A SLOW-PROGRESSING DISEASE OF HER RETINAS. SHE WILL EVENTUALLY LOSE HER SIGHT COMPLETELY. ALTHOUGH THIS WAS AN UNEXPECTED & SOMEWHAT DEVASTATING DIAGNOSIS, SHE WILL ALWAYS BE KIARA...AND CHERISHED! She's THREE years old now! When she was just about a year old, she began to have strange & scary health issues. The Vets never got to see her during these episodes, though. (They mainly happened @ night.) It seemed like it took forever to get a diagnosis. Her health & behavior were @ extremes. The changes were rapid & FRIGHTENING! Finally, after still more lab tests & ultrasound, it was discovered that she has a liver "shunt." Her blood takes a detour around the vital filter of her liver. It's serious, but better than not knowing why she kept approaching the brink of death! She has had a liver biopsy, is on daily medication & a prescription diet. There are side effects of her condition, as well. Dogs with this type of shunt (blood by-pass of the liver) are prone to bladder stones & some other conditions. She has devoloped this problem. She must now have her surgery to constrict this "extra" vessel & effect filtration of the blood through her little liver. (The body also requires substances derived from the liver.)
If You Could Look Into Her Little Teddy Bear Eyes & Then Feel Even One Of Her Precious Little Kisses, You'd Know That You Had To Do This, Too! The alternative is to have her put to sleep! NO WAY! She's A Precious Little Member Of Our Family! Animals Are Nothing Like Paper Plates...You Don't Just Throw Them Away When You Find A Weak Spot or Defect In Them! You LOVE Them...and You Act On Your Love! Kiara's Chances For A Full & Normal Life Are EXCELLENT With The Surgery & Follow-Up Treatment. We've Come So Close To Loosing Her A Few Times. I Can't Explain The Mourning During Those Episodes. We Have Faith & Hope Now! We're Working Hard To Make This Happen!
Kiara's Liver Shunt Ligation / Bladder stone removal surgery will be done by an Incredibly Dedicated Specialist in this field. The surgery will be performed @ Cornell Medical Companion Animal Hosp. in Ithica, NY. Her liver biopsy was done there in Jan. '08. They are dedicated, skilled & caring folks! We're determined to get back there as soon as we possibly can! Kiara is worth every struggle & fear. She deserves a normal life ! Please keep her in your most positive thoughts...and your Prayers!
