Arrival Story:
We spent a long time looking and studying breeds and were down to Shiba Inu and Portuguese Water Dog when we went to the Portland Dog show. We saw both breeds there and talked to breeders, and finally got to meet two, a nationally known show dog named Mo, and a backyard, beloved pet who charmed us by her trick of toning down her bark from loud to "Whisper." The Portie was our breed and we found a breeder online with a litter. We were told we would get one of two males, and she sent their pictures to us. When they were 6 1/2 weeks, with 4th of July coming, the breeder wanted them to go to their new homes before the scary fireworks started. So we got out backyard, "pet quality" puppy and took him camping the next morning. He was fantastic. Never had a potty accident, ever and demonstrated confidence and love of people from the very first. When he was 5 months old, we watched him stack himself in the back yard and decided to take him to the Portland Dog Show to be re-assessed, and the verdict was "You need to show him." We connected with the family that had his brother, and at first they took turns showing him. But finally, their 9 1/2 year old daughter became his handler and in 7 months she got his championship and they got a 3 minute segment on Animal Planet!

Bio:
Rowdy is the first really intelligent dog we have had. He is capable of reasoning his way through a problem, trying a couple things to solve his dilemma, and then coming to one of us and asking us for help. He also tricks poor Sammy, who is not the brightest light on the string, by making Sammydiversionary moves, like barking furiously in the kitchen, and when Sammy goes to investigate, Rowdy runs back and steals the bone or toy that Sammy had. For a couple years, I blamed poor Sammy for counter surfing, particularly for stealing butter whenever he could get it. Well, turns out it was actually Rowdy, the elder dog, the well trained, intelligent, dog we trusted.
