Arrival Story: I was volunteering at the Humane Society, including Christmas Day 2008; Suzie had been in the Shelter for a month--her previous owned dumped her there as she was sick. She was urinating blood, in a great deal of pain and was very badly matted in the hind end and had such long toenails that one was embedded in the pad of her foot. I took her home on Christmas Day for the weekend. With the help (financially of friends) I was able to get her to my Vet's to determine she had a huge bladder stone in her and we were able to raise the money and get her into surgery 4 days after her rescue as they were going to put her to sleep at the shelter. My friend in the US who raised the majority of the money raised more than we initially needed for the 1st surgery the money has enabled Suzie to also get a dental cleaning, extractions, follow-up testing and hind dew claws removed.
Suzie's on a special home made diet now as her bladder stone was partially struvite 95% and calcium oxalate 5%, so I'm feeding her a low oxalate diet.
March 2/09
Today she had her sutures removed from her hind legs and her urine tested -- no bacteria---yeah!. Things are looking really good for her. Next we need to work on socializing and manners---doggy school and if she can learn to be a nice girl with Nikki, my Bichon, she may have a permanent home here.
March 21/09 Suzie's still having accidents, she doesn't mean to, poor dear, as it's in her sleep or when she's relaxed and cuddling me-she leaks:( Turns out she has "spay incontinence"-never heard of it before so frantically with the help of Canadian friends vacationing in the US was able to get Suzie the Proin (meds) which can not be purchased in Canada...I got one year's worth. Vet wanted her taking PPA (basically the same thing) but, one year would have been too expensive for me and it was so much cheaper in the US. Thank goodness for dog people....they are the BEST.
April 12/09
Suzie has her new forever home HERE. She's doing really well. Great little walker, nicer to her sisters and the best news, she's now crystal free:))
May 27/09 Suzie went for her 1st grooming today...I was so nervous as the staff at my Vet clinic had told the groomer she would need to be sedated...she's a fiesty little gal if she doesn't get her way. I shampooed and blow dried her at home with aloe vera shampoo (she's a sensitive little girl:) and brushed her out so she wouldn't have to stay at the groomer's for long. Thanks goodness, the little darl'n didn't require sedation...I'm so happy and she looks so adorable. Oh, I had another cysto done and once again, no crystals. Our lives are great! Dog school's on hold but, she has also learned to shake a paw.
June 1 /09 I've been able to control Suzie's incontinence with 1/3 of the recommended dose suggested by our Vet. Tomorrow I will switch that dose to every other day. I hate when my girls have to take meds.
I hope to get her DNA tested this summer...I find that sort of thing so fascinating.
Suzie's DNA indicates she is part Lhasa part Shih Tzu...she's a sweetheart in any case.
July 09
Almost lost Suzie in June...she developed Hemorraghic Gastric Enteritis...was in Vet Clinic and ER Hospital on IV and meds for 11 days....THANK Goodness...she survived and her Aunt Christie helped raise enough money for her treatment.
New Year 2010
A New Year and a New Life....everything's good and the little monkey is now at a healthy, happy 15 lbs....
