Being able to make friends with Cain, who is a bit of a "crank".

Arrival Story:
I rescued Chloe's mom & 10 brothers & sisters from the San Antonio pound - she was about 2 1/2 weeks old at the time. They were all raised until adoptable age. Chloe was adopted along w/a litter mate. After about a month she was returned in poor physical condition because the adopter thought she had "ripped the ear off" another puppy. Whatever! I also discovered she had been used as a "bait" dog (although the crappy adopter might not have known this at first) by the adopter's adult children for their pit bull. None of that matters anymore - she's back home now, and not going ANYWHERE!

Bio:
For Chloe and all other dogs who make it: "There was once a wise old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. One day as he walked along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man, and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead was reaching down to the shore, picking up starfish, and very gently throwing them into the ocean. "Good morning! What are you doing?" asked the wise man. The young man paused, looked up, and replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean. The sun is rising, and the tide is out. And if I don't throw them in, they'll die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles of beach and thousands of starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!" The young man, listening politely, bent down and picked up another starfish, throwing it into the sea past the breaking waves. Turning to the old man, he modestly replied, "It made a difference for that one.""

"When I am Old... I shall wear Turquoise and soft gray sweatshirts... and a bandana over my silver hair... and I shall spend my Social Security Checks on Sweet Wine and My Dogs... and sit in my house on my well-worn chair and listen to my dog's breathing. I will sneak out in the middle of a warm Summer night and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow... and when people come to call, I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs... and talk of them and about them... The Ones so Beloved of the Past and the Ones so Beloved of Today... I still will work hard cleaning after them and mopping and feeding them and whispering their names in a soft, loving way... I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat, like a jewel and I will be an embarrassment to all... and my family... who have not yet found the peace in being free to have dogs as your Best Friends... These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall... and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep, to greet you as if you are a God. With warm eyes full of adoring love and hope that you will stay and their big, strong necks... and kiss their dear sweet heads... and whisper to their very special company... I look in the Mirror... and see I am getting old... this is the kind of woman I am... and have always been. Loving dogs is easy, they are part of me, accept me for who I am, my dogs appreciate my presence in their lives... when I am old this will be important to me... you will understand when you are old... and if you have dogs to love too." ~Author Unknown

Dogs are miracles with paws. ~Attributed to Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy

We long for an affection altogether ignorant of our faults. Heaven has accorded this to us in the uncritical canine attachment. ~George Eliot

I talk to him when I'm lonesome like; and I'm sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that. ~W. Dayton Wedgefarth

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. ~Roger Caras

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive. ~Gilda Radner

"I can't think of anything that brings me closer to tears than when my old dog ....... limps away from her nice spot in front of the fire and comes over to where I'm sitting and puts her head in my lap, a paw over my knee, and closes her eyes, and goes back to sleep. I don't know what I've done to deserve that kind of friend. Gene Hill

Per Tiller - :)) ""A man was walking down the road, thinking of all the poverty, pain and suffering in this world, so vivid within his sight, and grew mad within his restlessness, crying out to God, "how can you allow such anguish to continue, why don't you DO something!!!!" To which God replied, I did.... I sent *you*"
