Arrival Story:
Issabella was born in a puppy mill. When Issa was 7 weeks old, I saw her sitting in a pet shop that I had gone into for cat treats. Little did I know, she had fleas, ear mites, and mange. She was used to sleeping in her own messes, and the other puppies in the cage wouldn't let her eat, or drink so she was underweight. Her pretty white fur was matted and yellowed. I went home, did my research on her breed, and discovered that she could be the perfect dog for me; if she just got a chance. Not to mention, I was in love. At the time, I didn't know any better - I didn't know anything about puppy mills, and I trusted the small shop owner who told me that none of her puppies came from mills - so after falling in love with her, I bought her and brought her home. When we got her home, we discovered that Issa was hypoglycemic, had mange and fleas, and needed to see the vet. After she was medically sound, we had to deal with her fear of cages, her fear of noises, her fear of men, of trashcans, of cats, of telephones... And we had to deal with learning where to potty. It took 18 months to housebreak Issa, and she has never gotten over her fear of other dogs. I checked Issa's papers and found out the name of her "breeder" and the address she could be reached at, but decided against confronting her. In 2010, I joined forces with Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue as their secretary and web developer. On June 4th, the rescue and other volunteers went to the puppy mill where Issa was born to rescue 41 dogs... Including Issa's mother, now named Peek a Boo. I was able to personally rescue my dog's mother from slavery in a puppy mill! It was the single most meaningful experience of my adult life. Trying to correct a puppy mill pup has been one of the hardest challenges of my life, but has also been one of the most rewarding. Issabella has been, and continues to be, worth every moment of frustration, fear, and tears. She is my best friend, and greatest treasure.
