Arrival Story:
Shika came to me with the name Sheik when she was 2 years old in Nov. 2008. Isis had died and Ra was depressed over losing his sister. I couldn't bear the thought of getting a 'replacement' puppy but he needed a companion to get him out of his funk so Lee contacted a wolf rescue group and inquired about fostering. Within just a few days Shika, Oni & Nanu (see Baby in my favorites) arrived. They were starving, had endured a 6 day journey, fraut with difficulty, in crates from Wisconsin. They were scared and skinny but happy to be out of their crates. Oni & Nanu were 6 months old and Shika was 2. I thought I would bond tighter with the younger ones but it turned out that Shika won my heart first and most, although Nanu will always have a special place as well. (Nanu got adopted by the best family ever where she gets the 1 on 1 human interaction that she needed for her social development. She was VERY shy and it took special people to adopt her and she is blossoming in their care.) Shika, like the other 2, gained a whole bunch of weight rapidly, over 5lbs each in the first week. She was only 43 lbs when se came to us and I think she is 61 now and they all shed their coats in Dec and January (the wrong time) and replaced them with beautiful, healthy coats. She's currently in 'manners' class every Thursday although, other than jumping on me when she sees me she is a really good dog. She comes MOST of the time when she's called but she is skittish and scared around strangers so I thought school would be a good idea for the socializing aspects of it and, of course, fun with other dogs.

Bio:
Saddly, Ra never got to warm up to them before he was shot less than a week before their arrival. These dogs are not allowed the run of the yard like Isis and Ra were so there will be no more accidents (you can read about what happened to them on their own dogster pages). We go for runs off leash at the river behind a gate where they can't get into any trouble and they get supervised yard runs occasionally but their kennel is huge, 20x60 and the 3 dogs play hard so they get lots of exercise.
