We were dropping a friend off at her house one night when a tiny puppy came yipping out of the darkness to us. Our friend picked it up and it continued to yip and fuss. I took her, she continued to fuss. I handed her off to my husband and she quieted down immediately. So of course we had to take her home.
Rosie appeared to be blind when we brought her home, and a foul smell was emanating from her pores that could not be bathed away. The next day the vet said that perhaps she had gotten into something toxic like motor oil or the like and had swallowed it and it was causing blindness and was being secreted. The blindness went away after a couple of weeks, but it seems that this dog may have suffered some brain damage because of it. (Of course, with some dogs, that's hard to tell!) Anyway, we think of Rosie as our special dog. If strangers walk by the house at 1 pm, she will still be barking at them at 3 pm, and if she is brought inside to quiet down, when let out an hour later, she will go back to where she saw them and continue to bark at them (though they are long gone). She is very afraid of thunder and has destroyed several doorjambs trying to chew her way into the house if we are away when a storm hits. All of this just makes us love her more. She's also somewhat homely, with a tiny head and no neck to speak of. She is a wonderful dog and she loves us very much. And she is the bane of our dog Tupper's existence--he only had one year of peace before she joined the family; she goes into a submissive frenzy every time she encounters him, while he just wants to be left alone! Anyway, Rosie is fun!
