Likes:
To be the center of attention at all times--he's a dachshund, so what else would he like most?

Pet-Peeves:
Not getting food constantly. He will eat anything, anytime (but that isn't allowed by the human in charge.)

Favorite Toy:
The green and black squeakie ball that looks like a small soccer ball.

Favorite Food:
If it is food, it is his favorite. He is partial to potato chips but can't have them anymore or he will put on too much weight. Before he lost his hearing, he could hear a potato chip bag krinkle from four rooms away.

Favorite Walk:
Just around the neighborhood--he tires easily these days.

Best Tricks:
Sitting and pretending to be a statue in order to get a treat.

Arrival Story:
Nearly 13 years ago I visited a breeder to look at a litter of miniature dachshunds. I wanted a red, smooth-haired female. I came home with a red, smooth-haired male, who had crawled onto my feet and gone to sleep there.

Bio:
What can I say? He's a dachshund! It is their world and if we behave they will let us humans live in it. Louie is a typical dachshund--it's all about "ME." I always can tell when he is holding a grudge; he has "that" look. But, when he wants something, he can suddenly become so cuddly and sweet. What a devious little conniver he is, but a total joy nonetheless. He is the only dachshund I have ever seen who can put both ears straight up; or sometimes just one ear; or both ears straight out to the side so that he looks like a jet about to take off. Although he has AKC papers, I sometimes suspect there was a Chihuahua some generations back. Louie would never win any best of breed competitions, but he has a personality that makes up for his lack of show-dog looks. He has too many facial expressions to name, and can be so comical at times. He was his "daddy's" boy--totally my husband's shadow at all times. When my husband died two years ago, Louie was 11 years old, and in the past two years he has aged as if he is five years older. He is nearly completely deaf, and is losing his sight. However, the vet says his blood work and other health issues are that of a much younger dog. Louie loves everybody, except the big dogs he has had to put up with at home. He simply tolerates their presence and ignores them. But when Zoe, our red Doberman, died, I know Louie missed her, even though he ignored her most of the time. Now that we have Milo, Louie has simply let Milo know that, "Look, I'm old and I'm cranky, and I'm a whole lot smaller than you, so leave me alone." Then he goes back to sleep. Milo has learned to respect Louie's space, and Louie is just fine with that. He still, after two years, jerks his head up and looks around when anyone uses the word, "daddy." "They" (whoever "they" are) say that dogs forget humans after not seeing them for a while, but I don't believe it. Louie remembers my husband, and although he loves me, too, he would rather have his "daddy" back. I feel sad watching him age, but I know that someday he, too, will leave. I hope that when the time comes he will be able to be with his "daddy" again.
