Arrival Story: My brother was the Park Manager at the Florida Horse Park in central Florida. They build him a nice house on the outskirts of the park so he would be there 24/7. Well it wasn't long before he turned this house into his home and built a big porch onto the back overlooking the beautiful woods. Him being a typical guy, and living in the woods, occasionally his days started off by getting out of bed and walking out onto the porch to take a pee. Well one day he did just that and walked outside to see this small black dog looking up at him. Well him being the "wilderness" man that he is ran back inside to get his gun to shoot the dog. Right about that time one of his kind hearted co-workers just happen to pull up and begged my brother not to shoot the dog. My brother argued for a while due to the fact that the dog looked so horrible, all skin and bones, crooked face and such. But soon gave in and gave the dog some food. My brother then went on with his day figuring that the dog would wander off by that evening. Well it hadn't. When he pulled back up to his house and walked up on the porch the dog was laying there wagging its tail like crazy. It being an all black dog my brother decided to name it Blacky. He continued to feed it every day and soon became very attached. This dog would never leave his side, when he would leave for work in the mornings he would have to drive 2½ miles across the park to the office and a few minutes after he'd get there Blacky would show up having ran the whole way. My brother called me and told me this story and I came over to see for myself this mess of a dog that had just wandered up and I immediately fell in love. Sweetest dog ever. I was so surprised. Well after having Blacky for a week me my brother decided to take this mess of a dog to the vet. Turns out it was a girl, she had been spayed, and she had a microchip in her. My heart sank. I had grown so attached. The vet gave us the phone number that he pulled off the chip and instructed us to call the owner. We got back to the park and my brother tried to call what seemed like 100 times and there was no answer. He left messages and phone numbers and never heard back. Finally a few days later he got a hold of a man who just happened to not speech a work of English. My brother must have said 20 times "I have your dog, she wandered up to my house do you want to come get her?" this man had no idea what he was saying. After about 5 minutes of aggravation my brother hung up the phone and called the vet asking for the address of these people. He loaded up Blacky and got to this house and it was abandoned, it looked as if no one had lived there for years. Finally I convinced my brother to give up and keep the dog. (Which didn't take much, he acted all manly and responsible be he secretly was falling for this dog too.) She lived there with him for a few weeks and he nursed her back to health and fed her until she couldn't eat anymore. But everyday she would still follow him to work, not wanting to be left alone. My brother tried tying her up a few times but that scared her and he felt bad about it. So one day as much as he didn't want to he brought her over to our house and asked my parents if she could stay with us. Well of course my parents fell in love with her as well and since we have tons of land and open space it was a perfect fit, and we've had her ever since. My brother still comes to visit a lot and Blacky is as happy as can be.

So I came home for spring break, and just like I was anticipating, Blacky was waiting patiently at the end of the driveway for me to pull in. I could barely open my car door before she jumped right into my lap and started licking my face. Best feeling in the world ha-ha. So was so happy to see me, and I felt the same. I’ve been home for a couple days now and we’re pretty much inseparable. I take her along where ever I go, we play all day and then when we get back home we just go outside and play some more. It’s been really cold she she’s been sleeping inside with me, and even though she’s not suppose to be on my bed with me, I don’t mind a bit. Every time I come home we seem to grow closer and closer. I am dreading Sunday when I have to tell her goodbye and go back to school.

A few weeks after my brother brought Blacky to our house he came to visit and he and my dad were outside sighting in their guns for hunting season. Not even thinking about it, because all our animals were use to it, they began to shoot. Blacky freaked out. My mom and I were in the kitchen and Blacky was outside scratching on the door and barking and shaking so bad. I opened up the door and let her in and she jumped up in my arms so scared. She was absolutely terrified! And even to this day, some 2 years later she still runs to the closes person every time she hears a loud noise. Lawn mower, fire crackers, blower, guns, chainsaw, tractor, she is so skittish when it comes to loud noises. We think it may be from some previous traumatic experience that we don’t know about. But these days we’re much more careful around her.

A few months ago, actually it was last summer my and a few of my friends decided to go to the beach. I had been wanting to take Blacky for the longest time because she had never been, and I figured this would be the perfect opportunity. So we all loaded up Blacky included and headed to the beach. The ride there was perfect, as rowdy as my friends were Black was perfect in the car. So far so good. We got to the beach and we all piled out. Blacky took off running right toward the water and she heard a wave crash, freaked out and started barking at it. She just couldn’t seem to figure out how this thing was moving so much. She would chase the waves all day long up & down the beach barking like crazy and trying to bite the waves. Once she figured out it was water we couldn’t get her out. She swam all day long. Needless to say she slept the whole way home. To this day the beach is her favorite place to go, as is mine, were a perfect match!
