Happy Spring!!

I know I haven't posted to my diary for quite some time. It has been a long, cold winter. I have mostly have stayed inside napping and trying to stay warm. So glad to see spring is finally here! The snow in my yard has almost all melted now and the days are getting a bit warmer. I have been able to go outside and do a bit of sunbathing. I really enjoy that. I also have started to be able to dig holes again. Mom and dad aren't too happy about that though! Mom and dad put flea and tick preventative on me the other day- a sure sign of spring!

My friend, Rosco, has been spending the week with us. It is nice to have the company. I also enjoy sleeping in his bed!! That is OK, because he sleeps in mine too. We share! We also share food with each other- although I will admit, that I do try and steal his cookies whenever I can.

Looking forward to all the doggy fairs coming up soon. Welcome Spring!!

It's my Gotcha Day!

Today is my 6th Gotcha Day! Wow time sure flies by! It is hard to believe that it was 6 years ago today that mom and dad came to the kennel at the Seabrook racetrack and took me home. So much has happened in my life since then. I have loved every minute of my retirement.Yesterday my friends Thor and Rosco came over to visit with me. Mom turned it into a little minnie Gotcha Party for me. We had extra cookies to celebrate!

Here is my very first dogster diary entry- just a look back. Amazing how far I have come:
For the first 2 years of my life, I only knew the race track. My days were spent in a kennel with many other greyhounds. The routine was always the same, and I learned that routine and was very comfortable with it. Although I was bred to run and I do love to run, I just wasn't able to win any races. My best race was 3rd place and after that I just didn't do well. The next thing I knew, I was in a rescue shelter with other greyhounds. The routine there was similar to the race track so that was fine. People would come to the shelter to see us and take us for walks. On Feb. 1st, 2009, two people came and walked me. They spent a lot of time with me and I thought they were nice. They talked a lot to the woman who ran the shelter and then they left. The very next week they came back. Then a very strange thing happened. They made me get into this strange thing they call a car. I wasn't quite sure about it. The next thing I knew, I was leaving the shelter and riding in this car "thing" with two people I hardly knew. From that moment on, my whole world changed! Needless to say I was a bit confused, uncertain and scared! Thankfully they had a very large crate waiting for me. It was very much like he ones at the race track and the shelter. It was a place I could feel secure. It is quiet where I am now. There aren't any other dogs there, although there are 2 cats. I like cats and I don't chase them or anything. One cat is cool. I like to watch him play and run around. The other cat, I don't like so much. He stares at me! I growl at him sometimes. I don't chase him or anything, but I don't like how he stares at me. My new mom and dad are giving me lots of love and attention. I like that! I never got a lot of attention at the race track. I also like watching something called TV. It is a box with people and animals inside. I see a lot of dogs inside the box. The routine is all different now, but I am slowly getting used to everything. I have met some new dogs when we go for our walks everyday. They look different from me! I had never seen a dog that wasn't a greyhound. I have a new, best friend named Molly. She's nice. We played together yesterday and today we have a playdate at her house. Mom says I'll be able to run because she has a fenced in yard. My new mom and dad gave me some toys. I have never had toys before either. I like to carry them and bring them into my crate with me. Mom was laughing this morning because I brought some of the cat's toys into my crate. She told me that those toys weren't mine! I didn't know! She told me they are too small and if I ate them, I could get sick. Mom put the little toys where I can't reach them. It will take time, but I am getting more comfortable. One thing I do know, is that they love me.

We are having something called a blizzard today.I don't like it very much.this morning I couldn't get out int my yard because the snow was piled up against the slider door.Daddy had to go outside and shovel a path for me. When I went out a few minutes ago the snow was back up to my tummy again. It is still snowing! Will it ever stop? I am glad to be warm and in my bed right now.

Sound Hounds!

I went to a very special meet and greet tonight. I had no idea why mom and dad asked me to go for a ride after dinner. We usually go places when the sun is out. This time it was already dark. We ended up at a building. I could hear music coming from inside. The sign on the door said "Sound Hounds" on it. It was a benefit fund raiser for Greyhound Friends! A whole bunch of school children were playing music. They had their own bands! It was a little bit loud and noisy, but I was OK with it. There were two other greyhound ther. One was named Max and the other was Nova. They were very nice and I felt comfortable hanging out with them. Daddy brought my blanket to lie on, but I just stole one of the dog beds. BOL! Mom says I always do that! Nova had a very sad story. She wad adopted but had escaped several times from her home. She was then adopted by a mother and daughter. The mother and daughter left Nova outside and starved her! It made me and mom want to cry. When Nova was rescued she only weighed 30 pounds! Now she is around 60 pounds. She was a very sweet girl. I am glad they saved her in time. Now she has a wonderful new mom who takes excellent care of her. I made some new human friends tonight too. A lot of people came to pet me, including some children. I wasn't even afraid. I did very well. One little boy was especially nice. I think his dad is going to get him a greyhound of his very own. He was a very calm and gentle little boy. I enjoyed spending time with him. Another older man made friends with me too. I did enjoy the music they played. It was a little too loud, but that was OK. Later, we all went up to the front of the room near the stage. Nova's mom, Kathy, talked about Greyhound Friends and about greyhounds in general. She told them Nova's story. Then mom took the microphone and talked about me for a bit. Then Cindy talked about Max. I had a lot of fun. Even though it was crowded and noisy, I did very well. Mom and dad were proud of me. daddy took some pictures so I will try and post them soon. I hope they raise a lot of money for Greyhound Friends.

I am sad to have learned that my Friend, Sally Ally Bumbles went to the rainbow bridge this afternoon. I will miss her. Aaaarrrrrrrrrrrooooooo! Run free at the bridge my friend!

A Walk In The Park

I was a good dog today. Mom and dad were upstairs working out and someone came to the door. I let them know that someone was there. Daddy went to the door but he only took a paper from the lady. He told me she was something called a Jehovah Witness. Mom threw the paper in the trash. Later, mom and dad took me to the off leash park in Weston. It is only about 20 minutes from our house. It has trails and several large fields. There were lots of people and dogs there. I made some new friends. Daddy let me off the leash. I enjoyed sniffing around and playing a bit with the other dogs. It was fun. I stayed pretty close to mom and dad as I always do. Then mom and dad started to leave and go to the wooded trail that takes you back to the parking lot.. I really didn't want to leave. I decided I would stay a while longer, so I followed a woman and her two dogs back to the field. Mom and dad called my name but I used my selective hearing. Daddy had to go and get me. After that I had to stay on my leash the rest of the walk. We went to a pet store after our walk. Mom and dad got me 3 boxes of my favorite type of cookies. They have cream in the middle. Humans have a similar cookie called an "Oreo". Mom and dad also got 3 new fish for the fish tank. They are pretty. They are called Tetras. It was a fun day today.

Happy Holidays!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday- be it Yule, Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. We celebrate Yule and it was pawsome. Christmas day was quiet, but Christmas night we had some friends come over to watch the Dr. Who Christmas Special! I was so happy because my friends, Thor, Teddy and Ripley came over with their mom and dad. It was fun hanging out with my friends. I was sad to see them go. Today I noticed a new puppy across the street. I got all excited and wanted to meet her. Mom and dad took me over. She was a cute tan and white pitbull. Very sweet girl about 3 or 4 months old. She is just visiting for the weekend though. I was hoping she would be staying.

The Last 4 Days!

I have had an interesting time the past few days. Thursday. my friend Rosco came to spend the day with me. What fun we had! We ran and played out in the yard. I was sad when his mom came to pick him up. On Friday Daddy had the day off work. It was also grandma's 91st Birthday! That afternoon we went to grandma's house for a visit. Grandma saved me some of her chicken! I wasn't quite sure whether or not I could eat it or not. I waited until Grandma went to the bathroom before I ate it! I didn't want to eat anything I wasn't supposed to. We had a nice time. I had to ride twice in the "room that moves". I am getting more used to it, but I still don't like it much. I would rather climb the stairs. On Saturday mom did a lot of house cleaning. I knew something was going to happen. Sure enough. On Sunday we had a huge Yule party to celebrate the Solstice. we had about 35 people over the house! NO dogs came! I had to hang out with humans the whole night. I did get lots of attention though, which was nice. Mom and her friends sang carols. Two people brought guitars. It was a fun party. After the guests left we opened Yule presents. I got my favorite peanut butter cookies! Yummy!! I thought today was going to be a relaxing day. I was wrong. Mom and dad took me the groomers for a nail trim! I just don't like getting my nails trimmed. Glad that is over with!

Jingle Bell Walk AND a Parade!

What a day I have had! I think I will sleep for a week. We left the house early this morning and daddy drove us to Boston. We parked the car in a dark underground garage. It was kind of scary at first but when I jumped out of the car, there was Mr. Spock and his dad. A few minutes later my half brother, Padfoot and his brother Lupine were there. I felt much better after that and it was so good to see them. Mom dressed me in my jingle bell collar and reindeer antlers. Even mom and dad had antlers. Mr. Spock and I took the room that moves and Padfoot and Lupine took the stairs. We met above ground in Boston Common. Padfoot beat us to the Commons. We all walked across the street together into what is called the Boston Public Gardens. There we each got a new jingle Bell. We all met the swan boats are kept. Other friends started to show up. Lux, Trent, Ozzie and Robin all came too. Everyone had their holiday attire on. Channel 7 news was there. They took videos of me with a huge camera. Mom says I might be on the news tonight! We shall see. Mom and dad made a donation to the Greyhound Health Initiative. That is where Dr. Couto works. They are trying to find a cure for Osteosarcoma. Mom got a little card from them to keep in her wallet. The card tells how Greyhounds are different in their blood work from other dogs. It is a good thing to have. Then the walk started. We walked all through the gardens and the commons. It was so much fun. 85 Greyhounds came! This was the 10th annual Jingle Bell Walk. We finished up on a hill where there is a big monument and took a group a picture. I was tired, happy and planned to spend the rest of the afternoon sleeping. Was I wrong!

We got back home and I had a 2 hour nap. Next thing you know, mom is putting my harness and coat back on. Daddy drove us to where the Farmer's Market is in the summer. Mom put my jingle bell collar and reindeer antlers back on. From there we took a short walk to a huge parking lot. When I saw everyone, I knew what was going on. I have marched in parades before. This was my 4th parade. Daddy brought me over to the our group and then he left me with mom. Daddy had to go work at a ping pong tournament. Mom and I marched with MayDOG which is the Maynard Dog Owner's Group. We had a marching band in front of us and a marching band behind us. I was fine. I think our whole town was there watching. People lined the streets and mom waved to everyone. I pranced along, right in the middle of the road. I knew when to stop and when to start. 2 Girls carried our banner. It was fun, but I was tired afterwards. Mom and I watched the rest of the parade come back to the parking lot as we started to head for home. I saw my friend, Santa and he waved to me! It was nice to see him again.

I am going to crash now!

I am wearing shorts!

I have shorts on!! I have a hot spot on my leg and I have been licking it a lot. The skin got all red and irritated. Mom bought me some medicine and it is helping. The medicine smells like model airplane glue! It is just for hot spots. She had to put my muzzle on me for the past few days because I wouldn't leave the spot alone. I really hate my muzzle and I was doing everything I could to get it off. This morning mom and dad decided to put on my shorts from one of my costumes. At first I just stood there looking at mom with blinking eyes. She just laughed and went upstairs. I followed her. I guess wearing shorts is better than wearing a muzzle. Mom says That when my hot spot gets a little better, she will see if I can leave it alone.

My 8th Birthday Party!

I had my 8th Birthday pawty last night! What a fun time I had! SO many of my friends came. We had a full house. I got so many wonderful gifts and treats. Thank you everyone. Thank you Johnny B, Cella, Lux, Rosco, Robin, Riley, Fast, Minion, Enzo, Flint, Gill, Mr.Spock, Thor, Ripley and Teddy and everyone's mom and/or dad! We all got to run in my yard and we had dog cake and doggy cookies shaped like greyhounds. I have never seen the house so full with both dogs and people. Daddy counted 15 dogs that came to my Pawty and there were about the same number of humans. A few of my human friends came without dogs too.

We did almost had a disaster at my pawty last night! Holly the Honktapus was almost deaded! My friend, Flint, had pulled her out of my toy box. I didn't think too much about it at the time. Then mom noticed that Holly was bleeding stuffing on the floor. She jumped up and rescued Holly. The wound was minor and we got to her in time. Thankfully Rosco's mom (Katherine Orcutt) is a skilled surgeon and was able to operate on Holly. She is recovering now and I am keeping her close to me. We expect a full recovery.
