Arrival Story: My parents swore they were never going to get another dog. But while home for Thanksgiving my freshman year of college, my mother and I dropped some donations off at the local animal shelter and decided to take a peek at the dogs. Most were jumping and barking as we walked past, but one sat still and stared at us with big brown eyes. Soon his paws started trembling and our hearts melted. My mother went back on her own and when the shelter staff gave Charlie to her to hold, he immediately put his paws around her neck in a big hug. When my father later went to the shelter to look at the dog my mother had raved about, he was told that Charlie was already adopted, only to discover that the new owner was, in fact, my mother. And that's how my parents decided to fill their empty nest with a four-legged son.

Bio: We got Charlie when he was about six months old, but he had already led a very traumatic life. Animal control found him wandering the streets with a heavy tow chain around his neck (the chain weighed 3.5 pounds, he weighed 11; see photo from the shelter's display board), probably in the hopes of strengthening his neck muscles to make him into a fighting dog. Charlie, however, is a lover and not a fighter, preferring to lick everyone and anything that comes near. He and Sassy often groom each other, and he loves playing with small children.
