Arrival Story: Molly Jean is a 6 month old possible purebred Black Lab puppy who is up to date on shots, housebroken and ready to be a part of a loving and caring family. She was surrendered to the shelter because her owner could not take care of her as his wife is disabled and having a puppy was too much of a strain on the family. He advised the shelter that she is a great girl, very friendly and extremely loving and playful. She is around 40 lbs. now and should weigh about 60 lbs. when full grown. Bio: All pets listed on this site are urgent. Do to pet overpopulation, this city run shelter does euthanize for space
If you see a pet you are interested in on the website, please feel free to call, email or visit the shelter.
The Shelter will adopt animals outside of the city and state as long as the family is willing to make at least two trips to Petersburg. One trip will be to meet the pet and complete the adoption paperwork. If you have a pet already, you may want to bring him/her to the shelter to make sure they are compatible. If the application is approved, the next trip will be to pick up the pet up from it's sterilization appointment and take it home. If the animal is already spayed/neutered, than only one trip will be necessary. The Shelter is unable to ship animals to new homes.
Adoption Applications are available online by clicking here: *Adoption Application*
Please note that we are unable to "hold" a pet that you may be interested in; the only way to "claim" a pet you may want to adopt is to submit an application through this website, via email or in person at the shelter. Applications are accepted and screened on a first come, first serve basis; the Shelter will accept up to three applications per pet.
Your application will be carefully screened and, if it is approved, you will pay an adoption fee. The adoption fee is $88-111 depending on: which veterinary office is available for the surgery; the age and sex of the dog; and is slightly less for cats. This adoption fee covers the new owner's portion of the spay or neuter, a pain injection fee, and a current rabies vaccine (pending the pet is old enough). We do not have a fee for the animal itself, the money you pay is for the vetting. If the animal is already spayed/neutered, a donation of $55 is requested made payable to the Petersburg SPCA. Cash or personal checks are accepted forms of payment. We are unable to accept debit/credit cards.
When you complete the final paperwork, a Shelter staff member will schedule the spay/neuter surgery at a vet in Petersburg or the surrounding area. The pet will stay at the Shelter until the surgery date, the Shelter will transport the pet to the vet, and you will pick your pet up from the vet and take him/her home! Therefore, unless the pet is already spayed/neutered, adoptions do not take place immediately; depending upon availability of vet appointments it can take 5-10 days from your application being approved to taking your new pet home. Please understand that it is Shelter policy that all animals are sterilized and given a rabies shot before they may go to a new home.
