Arrival Story: Mama and her puppies are my newest fosters. Mama's former owner dropped off her 6 2-week old puppies (after "giving away" a 7th puppy... yes, at TWO weeks!!!) to the shelter without Mama. The pups went into different foster homes for round the clock bottle feeding. Meanwhile, an ACO went to her owner's house and asked if they could reunite mom and pups for everyone's health and development, even on just a temporary basis. Mama's owners surrendered ownership of her instead. So Mama went on the ACO truck and was driven back to the shelter. I was there that day and got tracked down by a couple of the workers who had pups in foster care. I didn't have any fosters at the time, just a goofy new permanent pup (Stewie). I was really tempted to hold my ground and say "NO!!!" but they know I'm a push over. Mama was so scared on the ACO truck but the ACO assured me she was very sweet. Mama was moved to a crate in the intake office and stayed there until most of the pups were driven back to the shelter, which took about an hour. I sat and talked with her a bit while we were waiting for the pups and she'd very subtly growl at me regularly. She was not a happy camper! We got all the pups back together within a day and once she realized we brought food and we weren't interested in taking away her puppies, she stopped growling and running to hide in the crate with her pups every time we entered her "maternity suite". After awhile we were able to handle her puppies but she was very suspicious and would never take her eyes off of her pups at first. But she is quite the sensible dog and a very attentive mom and she is indeed very sweet. Her pups were all adopted in April.
