Arrival Story: While working at Rockinoak Labradors Kennels, one of the labs had a litter of puppies about a month before I began. The owner had to go away for 6 days and so I took care of the whole kennel myself. While cleaning the puppy kennels one morning, I noticed one of the litter of 8 yellow pups lying off by itself. I checked to make sure it was alive, and then began to realize that it appeared lethargic and not feeling well. The litter mates were running around my feet playing as puppies do, but this one just laid there. I called the owner first who in turn called her vet, then called me and told me to take it to the vet. I had never worked at a kennel before, this was my first time, so I was really nervous. The vet thought at first that he contracted pneumonia, but it turns out that he had a little bug as well as has a build up of scar tissue on his larynx-which makes him sound like a 'debarked' dog, and he gets out of breath because the airway gets swollen. The bug he contracted, made him run a fever, hence the lethargy, lack of appetite and wanting to be alone. The owner instructed me to take him to the house, and crate him and keep him away from his littermates for awhile until we were sure they wouldn't also get sick. Well, I hand fed him, I put a cold, damp washcloth inside the front of the crate for him to cool off his little belly, and forced pedialyte through a syringe for him to drink. I did this several times a day for 5 days and finally by the 6th day, he showed signs of improving. I even played Enya all night long so he would sleep, because he missed his siblings, and the housedogs were not able to comfort him. The owner called me a couple days later when she returned home to say he appeared to be making a complete recovery, but with one drawback-he could not be shown and since she wasn't sure whether it was congenital or not, he couldn't be bred either. So, she wanted to find a quality 'pet' home for him and every time she thought she had one, it fell through. So, I finally spoke up and told her that I wanted him, but hadn't said anything because I thought she had homes for him.
Then, his brother 'Star' was supposed to go to a nice home, but that fell through also. My husband told me that if she was unable to place him we would take him. Turns out to be the best choice we ever made, Star was born with a 'star' shaped cataract in his left eye, so he and Lucky (so-named because he was a 'lucky' puppy) played together all the time. I hadn't really given it much thought until we brought Star home, and now we have nicknamed them 'the Boys' or 'the Bookends'...they are inseperable and both have geared their play to accomodate the others disability.

Bio: Their daddy 'Ice Man' (his nickname)-or officially Am/Can CH Oakridge Polar Ice "Ice" and their mommy Rumor (her nickname) or officially Rockinoak Talk of the Town of Rockinoak Labradors Kennel, were/are yellow, sweet, good-natured and loving. Ice, unfortunately crossed over the Rainbow Bridge last year, and will be greatly missed, but at least his legacy is living on through the 'Bookends'.
