Nicknames: Jack-Jack .. or just Jack.. and most recently Jack the Ripper (as training isn't helping his habit of shredding paper)
Birthday: July 13th 2007
Likes: treats.. and ripping up paper.. whichever he can get to easily.
Pet-Peeves: he dislikes the gentle leader..
Favorite Toy: a now squeekless bone shaped stuffed toy.. or any paper he finds.
Favorite Food: Blue Buffalo Fish and Sweet Potato..
Favorite Walk: Ruddiman Creek
Best Tricks: Not big on the tricks yet.. although he does bow fairly well..
Arrival Story: He is actually a sad story.. the breeder was getting ready to put him down because he turned a year old without selling (seriously one day after he turned 1).. someone called me and said to meet this woman and see the dog.. I couldn't resist him. One year with little human contact left him very timid.. but I brought him into training.. and he's now like a different dog..
Forums Motto: I only listen if you have treats, deal?
My roommate was practicing shading and sketched Jack as he sat next to him watching tv.. He was in his normal slouched position.. the sketch was then given to me as a gift.. I of course decided to get it as a tattoo.. I love it! BlackJack is my baby, and is now a part of me permanently.
Well, today we had our first real snow for the winter.. and it is freezing cold out. While I was asleep the wind blew the door open.. (not sure how as it was locked.. not a deadbolt, but still .. locked)
I woke up hearing someone call Lou.. it didn't sound like my mother.. but I was just waking up, so that didn't occur to me.. I stumbled downstairs to help get him in.. it wasn't her.. it was my neighbor telling me my beagle was running down our road. I wasn't too worried at this point.. my beagle loves strangers.. he will walk up to anyone.. as I thought.. I found him within minutes. .
Walking back in the house though.. I noticed that the only other dog was my old schnauzer who barely walks.. then I get worried. Jack is timid around strangers.. he's not likely to walk up to anyone.. and Little Bit is new to us.. I don't have any clue what she's likely to do.. (we found her as a stray, but it took three days to catch her)
I walk around the block a few times.. it's around 8 am.. and need I mention again.. COLD.. I thought I heard them barking, but there was construction going on down the road and I couldn't place it.. or tell if it was them..
I stopped driving around looking for them.. as it was doing no good... so I called and placed a lost dog ad.. ($30..and I don't get most of that back even though I just cancelled it) .. posted ads on every site I could think of.. uploaded pics so I could add those on as well.. .. Every 15-20 minutes I went back out and drove around or walked.. finally at around 3pm I heard barking.. the construction was quiet so I followed it.. Jack was barking frantically from behind a fence.. There is NO access to this area.. it is illegal to go on the property (as it is dangerous.. railroad tracks, tanks of who knows what.. etc) Well I could see him.. he was still barking frantically at me.. running back and forth in front of this tank thing that had a "moat" around it.. (a cement wall with another one inside that with about 8 inches of frozen water in it).. Little bit was stuck in the cement block under the tank.. there was no way for her to get over the moat.. She was barely barking.... I imagine she was REALLY cold.. as we found her shaved down.. and she'd been groomed since then .. she's got very little fur.. Finally when I could see her he came up to me.. he ran up the hill, climbed through a tiny opening in the fence and came right to me.. but barked again when I walked away.. So, I carried him home put him in my car and drove to the fire dpt. across the street from where I saw her. (he was covered in balls of snow.. stuck in his pads.. etc so I left him in the car with the heater on)
It took some convincing.. but they climbed through the fence and got her.. (there is no one around with a key to that gate.. and no legal way to go on there and get the dog).. She was shivering.. barely able to bark... the guy told me she would not have lasted much longer where she was.. under a large metal tank on a concrete slab in the middle of frozen water.. but.. she's fine.. 15 minutes in my warm car with a wool blanket around her and she perked right up..
I have to say this.... if I'd had any more doubts about keeping her.. they are gone. Jack knew how to get home.. once I saw her he came right to me.. but he refused to leave her there.. They had been out there for a long time.. and he could have come home at any moment.. but didn't.. He really tried to protect her.. and he was frozen as well.. (he has more fur.. but only the feathers and beard).. Quite a day today.. These two are awesome dogs.. (now... had they stayed in my room regardless of the open door I would have been a bit happier.. but.. .. it is what it is)
So, I decided to bring Jack to the dog beach today.. it was cold.. there was a little snow coming down and the beach was empty.. he was unphased. I walked down the length of the beach and back.. he was happy and excited the whole time.. (he did have a sweater on as he's been groomed recently) I wish I could tolerate walking in the cold more.. winter is the worst.. it's hard to burn off his energy when my lungs burn and I can't breath when walking in the cold air.. I may try the walk with the three dogs that CAN walk it tomorrow... today was a day just for blackjack.. (he's still a bit timid when out in public without the other dogs.. so he gets days just to himself so I can work with him)
Funny though.. he LOVES the beach.. but HATES the water.. If I even went in the direction of the water he'd try to stop dead.. The waves were crashing.. but he wasn't interested in going near it when we went in the summer when it was calm.. he just doesn't want to be near it. OH well.
