So mom decided to give me a bath today of all days? And a flea combing? What kind of birthday present is that?!

Late birthday treat!

Mom decided to go get an ice cream at the waterfront park on our bike ride tonight. The lady told her that they had doggie ice cream cones, so she bought me one . It was really good , too bad Mom only let me eat half of it.

I let some girls pet me!

Mom brought me to the people park last night. As we were walking down the trail, a group of teenage girls was coming the other way. They asked if I was friendly, and mom said "Not really." One of them stopped , crouched down and put out her hand. Then she scratched me under the chin ( such a smart girl, NOT on the top of the head right away). I snapped when she moved a bit but she stayed right there and approached me carefully again. I even let her pet me on the head! Then her friend , who was watching the whole time , did the same things and I let her pet me too! See, I am friendly, you just have to approach me the right way!

I have had a pretty good summer, bike riding with mom, walking on the trails, the dog jog, the blessing of the animals , and car rides. However, the days are getting shorter, and my outings will be getting fewer and fewer. It' s almost time to "hibernate" in the house till Spring. Such is the life of a warm blooded Chi in a cold climate.

My turn for the vet

Last Wednesday Mom woke up to me shaking my head. She thought maybe something had bit me, so she decided just to keep an eye on me. She and Dad tried to look in my ear but couldn't really see anything. Sunday I was sticking my paw in my ear and really scratching. Mom was watching me do this and suddenly a dead winged insect fell out of my ear! Mom thought that might be the end of the whole thing, but I kept shaking my head. Today she got Dad to bring me to the vet, who said my ear was inflamed and gave me some ear drops. Dad told mom that I was fine with the vet tech but bit the vet! opps! I heard Mom and Dad talking about putting those drops in my ears later and something about how its going to take the 2 of them and a muzzle. How come Bunny got yummy antibiotic treats and I get stupid ear drops?!

This ear drop thing not such a bad deal after all

Mom decided to try and give me my ear drops without using a muzzle. She wraps me up in a towel and feeds me peanut butter, while Dad puts the drops in my ears. So if even I don't get tasty antibiotic treats, I am getting peanut butter twice a day!

Yay, no more ear drops!

Dad brought me back to the vet today and the vet said my ear was all healed! I didn't mind getting the peanut butter, but mom was kind of nervous because the ear drops had Pred ni sone in them and I was drinking and peeing a lot. Now Mom and Dad just have to put some ear cleaner spray in my ears for 4 days . Then when I get my bath, I have to have that spray again. Dad told Mom I didn't mind getting the ear spray. Too bad now that I can go out again, it's getting too cold for me. Bunny got to go to the nature reserve and I had to stay home because Mom was worried about the ear drops making my immune system weak. I will keep my paws crossed that I can get a couple of more outings before I am stuck in the house for the winter.

Finally my turn for the Nature Reserve!

Yesterday, I finally got out of the house! Mom put on my nice new warm sweater that the neighbour gave me and off we went in the car. I had never been down the coastal trail before. I had fun sniffing and kicking up all the leaves. Good thing we went out when we did, because last night after we got home, that cold, white, wet stuff was all over the ground!

Uncomfortable weekend and painful Monday

Saturday Mom noticed I stayed in my kennel all day. She figured by the way I was acting that my glands were full. Of course the vet is closed on weekend. Mom and Dad left me in peace in my kennel all weekend except to coax me to eat a bit. First thing this morning, Mom and I headed off to the vet. Mom wrapped me up in a blanket because it was rainy and windy. While she was settling me in the blanket, she accidentally touched my back end and I yelped. We got to the vet and she told them I needed to see the vet tech to get my glands emptied. The vet tech came and Mom unwrapped the blanket. The vet tech started to look and she told Mom "You have a bigger problem here." My back end was full of blood, my gland had ruptured :( Mom figured out when we got home, it ruptured just before we left the house because there was blood on the back porch. She knew it hadnt happened before, because she watched me pee just before we left. The vet came, checked the other gland ( it was ok) , gave me a needle with antibiotics and some pain meds. She couldn't check the one that ruptured too much because it was too painful. Mom felt so bad, but the vet said there was no way this could have been prevented. My glands had been checked about three weeks ago when I went for my ear checkup and they were empty. The vet said I am just unlucky. The vet said I should start to feel better within 24 hours. I finally ate my pain med and some of my kibble that Mom mixed with cottage cheese. Anal gland problems really are a pain in the rear....

That's what the vet said, anyway. She said I have the power of superhealing! She was amazed today with how well my anal gland rupture healed. She told Mom that she had been quite concerned about how that was going to heal, but she was very pleased.
