Maximus- Aurelius
Playing with- other dogs is my- life!
Barked: Mon Mar 11, '13 6:48pm PST
I am writing today to share my story of Maximus Aurelius crossing over the rainbow bridge because I think it is the least I can do. I was forced to put him down on 12/28/2012. He was 11, 13 days short of his 12th birthday.
He had a rabies vaccination November 6th as it had been 3 years since his last one. It caused IMHA and Thrombocytopenia. On Christmas eve, he began bleeding when he went to poop. I took him to the vet but they did not diagnose him correctly. 12/26 he began peeing blood. I rushed him back to the vet and they did diagnose him with an immune related problem. They referred us to a specialist. They determined the rabies vaccine caused his immune system to turn on itself, destroying his platelets. Platelets are what clot our blood so when he began bleeding intestinally, it would not stop. They attempted to stimulate his immune system with $1000 treatments, but when they tested his platelet count again, he only had 3. The normal count should be in the 100's of thousands. I made the decision to put him down or he would have bled to death.
He had his vaccinations regularly since he was a puppy but the doctor said she is seeing more and more cases like this. In Max' honor, I feel compelled to let people know because if my story can save one beloved animal, then it was not all just a tragic event. The doctor told me there are alternatives to vaccinations although I was unaware of that before Max was ill. She said because Max was in his couch potato stage of life, never was boarded or kenneled, could no longer go to dog parks because being 3 legged, he physically could not handle it, was never off leash, he would have been fine to go the remainder of his life not having any more vaccinations. She said she has written letters stating they are fatal for many animal parents and this has sufficed. I am not suggesting doing away with vaccinations however I am saying had I known there were alternatives, I may have taken that route and still have my baby here with me. I would not wish this experience on anyone or any fur baby. Please share Max' story. Thank you and I wish you and your family health, happiness and all of the love for 2013! from Max
I wanted to see if anyone else had problems with bleeding after vaccines.. I did and passed from it also. But they said there wasn't any evidence it was so.

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.'
