Arrival Story:
We had Duke our beloved cocker spaniel for 14 yrs. He came to us out of an abusive home. Duke at the age of 2, was separated from his sister Daisy at that time. Through Duke's 14 yrs with us, he battled a rare blood disease which almost took his life. But Dr. Brazil-Walton, the miraculous vet saved Duke. She is the best. She explained if we couldn't afford the treatment at the time, she would still take care of Duke. As Dr Brazil said, "Duke's a tough old bird and we're going to try and beat this". At the time, Duke's blood count was down to 14 and dropping. At 11, there was slim hope. But on that one day, Dr. Brazil-Walton came to us and says, I think we did it! She did!! Duke still needed treatment for a little while and then he was as good as new. We then moved to St. George, UT. and Duke got sick again. We tried a few vets, but none compared to Dr. Brazil. Duke was getting sicker and he couldn't travel to Las Vegas and Dr. Brazil couldn't travel to Utah. Dr. Brazil worked her magic again and Duke was once again himself. But in Nov. 2005, Duke ate some of the recalled Alpo with gravy and with his history of health, there was no helping this time. On 01/01/2007, Duke was laid to rest. After having Duke for so many years, it was very difficult thinking about wanting another pet. At the time, we threw out toys, bowls, food and leashes, just so we wouldn't be reminded. On 01/10/2007, we talked and decided we would go to the pound and see what kind of dogs they had. We wanted a small dog this time and if there wasn't something that we really wanted, we wouldn't get. We were really limiting our choices while thinking of Duke. We went into the kennel area and noticed 9 dogs. Some were too big, some were too small. There were no Duke sizes but I couldn't leave with no one. I went there for a reason. As we walked down the aisle, little sad eyes looked at me from the left and the right. I noticed one cage and the poor thing looked at me with 'Duke's eyes'. The look that only your dog can give. Well I put my fingers to the cage and the dog licked them. I had to leave immediately, I couldn't stop the tears. All those poor animals with no homes. We left the shelter and started driving towards home. I looked at my husband and said, I can't go home with no one. There must be one for us. Less than 1.5 minutes, we turned around and were on our way back. My husband said he would go in, did I have one in mind? Yes, I wanted the red dog that gives the Duke look. He looks maybe a little older and kind of overweight, but that's ok. I waited in the reception area. When the animal shelter employee and my husband brought out the dog, whoops, definitely not small and definitely skin and bones. The employee said if you don't want him, we can take him back. We picked this one and He now is ours, where do we sign. We left with this poor malnutritioned, abused and neglected animal and started home. We asked him what names he would like. After saying a few names, Spike was what he responded to. Now the rest is history. The self named Spike is 3 yrs old, 75+ lbs and OURS!!

Bio:
Spike now weighs 75+ lbs, has a chihauhau sister named Duchess who is 11 mos old. A 16 yr old sister cat named, Cricket and a 3yr old rabbit named Boo.
