Arrival Story:
My name is Prince and I have a Nose that Goes. I am one of three dogs in our home, Yours, Mine and Ours. My brother Dudley moved into my home when my daddy met my mommy, who had a puppy named Dudley. When Dudly first moved into my house I did not like him too much. He is a little rat terrier, kinda like a jack Russel mix, with a growley and fiesty personality. I was able to keep him in check without too much trouble, as I was not willing to give up my alpha position at any cost, no matter how much he growled. Eventually, he got the hint and soon stepped into place. But he still growls when he does not get his way. I think he is just a bit spoiled. Dudley lived with us for a couple years, then when my mom and dad got married we became an official family. I love my Mom and Dad so much, they takes us for walks all over and lets me sniff and track all the critters in the woods. Dudley is allowed to go off leash sometimes, because he stays close, and comes when called, but I cannot. I get so involved in sniffing that I forget everything and tend to get lost. Dudley and I are brothers and do everything together. He keeps me company and always lets me know when anyone was walking down our street, just in case they are threatening. We always know when the UPS truck is coming around the corner, cuz Dudley hears it first, before anyone even sees it! Dudley is a watchdog and has excellent hearing. We always say Duds sleeps with one eye open and one ear up. His job is to make sure we are all safe, and he does his job well. He is a Terrier mix, a mutt that Mom brought here from the Virgin Islands, where my daddy met them. Mommy calls Dudley a West Indian Coconut Retriever" but he is really a mutt. He is about half the size of me, but 10 times more fiesty, and can be downright mean if he wants to be. Better not come in our house unless you are invited! Dudley has a lot of nick names because he has such a funny personality. Mom and Dad call him "chainsaw" becasue he likes to show his teeth. His other name is "twenty pounds of sheer terror" but I will never forget the one night his nickname changed. We were camping up in the Adirondack mountains when Dudley heard some wolves or maybe coyotes howling and growling. The coyotes had just made a kill, and they sounded very nasty. Boy, they sure put his little growls to shame! He got so scared that his whole little body started shaking and pulsing like a blender! He slept on daddy's chest all night and didnt stop shaking. After that, Dad called him "Twenty Pounds of Terrified Terrier". That night Dudley knew, that without the protection of his family, he could easily become Coyote Kibble! His attitude got a little better after that. Well, slightly. We go on lots of family outings; walks, camping, jeep rides, boat rides and hiking in the mountains, and I howl whenever Mom or Dad ask me, "Prince, do you wanna go for a jeep ride?" Or "Boat ride, Princey?" Sometimes they ask, "Wanna go to Long Lake?" That is where we go camping in the mountains. All the neighborhood kids get a kick out of my howls, so they ask the questions, too. I howl for them, just to humor them, but I know that only Mom and Dad can take me for boat rides and jeep rides! We are a happy family and things were going very well, when one day we all went on an outing to PetSmart to pick out a special treat. Duds and I love our trips to PetSmart, (provided we were not there to get our nails clipped!) Mom says, "Show me what you want", and we sniff all over the store until we find the best treat we can find. Duds taught me to sit when I find the one I want because that is how we get to pick what we want. So I followed suit, and Mom buys us whatever treat we sit next to. But this day was special. When we entered the store and started to track for treats, I heard the howling bark of a Beagle. I perked up my ears and led the pack to the back of the store. And there she was, a beautiful female Beagle that was up for adoption. Her name was Katie, and she smelled very familiar. I was certain I sniffed her before. My mom recognized her too. She said, "I know that dog, her name is Katie!" And she was right! Katie was our neighbor. We used to see her walking on her leash around our neighborhood streets. What happened? Why was Katie up for adoption? We found out that Katie's family could no longer care for her and had given her up for adoption. My mom said we would take Katie home with us to see how she got along with our family. Katie fit right in and found her place in the pack. She needed a little help understanding the house rules, and pee-peed on the floor a few times, but she learned how to go through the doggie door really quick! She was smart and very sweet. It seemed Katie was happy that she found us, and I liked Katie. Even though I am neutered and she is spayed, we really took to each other. Katie came with us on walks, and enjoyed the family outings. On our walks, she alerts us to any animals lurking in the woods by baying loudly. She has a howl that could light up the night sky. We think Katie was once a hunting dog. At first Katie would not jump up on the furniture at our house. Perhaps she was not allowed to at her old house. But our house functions soley for the comfort and convenience of two spoiled dogs and Katie made three. Soon Katie got comfy on the couch for her naps, and I taught her how to circle around so that her head ends up smack-dab on the pillow, just like a human! She has her own doggie bed, but sometimes she likes to sleep on my bed cuddled up next to me . I like when Katie cuddles with me. As she got comfortable in our house, Kate tried to gain status by striving to be top dog, but I wouldnt have it. Every once in a while I had to put her in her place. That is MY position, and will be forever, because I am Prince, the Pampered Pup, the King of the Pack and the Best Puppy in the Whole Wide World! I am the Pup that all other dogs strive to be!
