Arrival Story:
I had been picked up as a stray in a rural county in Kentucky. In my time outside I developed a nasty ear infection. This caused me to constantly scratch at my ear and whine. Some people thought this meant I had fleas and therefore no one wanted me. After just 5 days at a filthy overcrowded shelter I was scheduled to be put to sleep. On the day of my execution I was fortunate enough to be acquired by the Kentucky Humane Society in Louisville. This was good as it bought me more time to live. After a long scary ride to Louisville I went to another overcrowded kennel. I didn't like it much because the other dogs were SOOO NOISY that it hurt my infected ear. But at least I was alive. I got to see a Vet but because there were so many dogs the Vet didn't spend much time looking at me. He simply said I had ear mites and put a little cream in my painful swollen ear. I went up for adoption again but because I was older (4 years old) many families never gave me a second look. Everyone loves puppies but us older dogs are often overlooked. It didn't help that I was in much pain and frightened by all the noise. I tended to curl up in the corner of my cage and avoided looking at people. I was an easy doggie to skip over. After 3 weeks of being skipped over by potential adoptive families I was labled as 'unadoptable' and was scheduled to be transfered to Louisville Metro Animal Services to be 'humanely euthanized' I don't know what that meant but it sounded scary. I only knew that the very next Sunday would be my last day at the shelter. Well on the Saturday before my last day a couple with a young daughter came in looking for a pet. I heard the man say 'he wasn't looking for anything specific, ' he just wanted to see what was available. As usual the family walked right by my cage but then something happened. The little girl said 'awwww look, that doggie seems scared'. Then the man and the woman came back to my cage and put there fingers in to scratch my back. I was a bit startled so I stood up to see what was happening. The women said 'Oh she is so pretty' and the man put his finger just barely in the cage so I could sniff it then lick it. This was the most attention I had in weeks and I loved it. I was still scared but they all seemed very nice. Then I heard them ask the shelter volunteer if they could see me 'Out of the cage' My heart was pounding as the door opened and a leash was slipped over my neck. The first thing I did was go to the little girl and gently lick her hand. I then heard the lady say 'come here pretty girl' and I walked over to her and gave her the biggest hug the only way I knew how, by leaning all of my body weight against her as I looked up into her eyes. The man then put his hand on the back of my head and scratched me. It felt sooooo good that I then hugged him the same way. The man a woman looked at each other and said the greatest word I ever heard. 'Shes coming home with us' They told me that I was so gentle and so sweet that I would be called 'Lady' They bought me food and toys and a beautiful collar and told me I was part of their family now. They took me to their house and showered me with attention. While 'dad' was petting me he scatched behind my ears and I cried out from the painful infection. 'Mom' put me in the car and took me to a nearby Vet. But it was different from the one at the shelter. I was the only dog in the room and they Vet spent a lot of time looking at me. He ran tests and determined that I had a yeast infection and not ear mites. He cleaned my ears which hurt a lot but I felt I could trust him. He told my mom that 'its hard to believe this dog just came from a shelter. She is so trusting and so gentle. You got a good one!' He gave my the right kind of medicine and soon I was feeling much better. I've been with my new family for almost a year now. They spoil me rotten. I always have a warm bed to sleep in, plenty of food, clean water and a big yard to play in. Every month they take me to the groomer who raves about what a 'good girl' I am and makes me look and smell like a 'lady' Recently they rescued more dogs and now I have friends to play with. Life is really good. I'm so glad I am around to enjoy it. Thanks Mom and Dad. A special Thanks to all of the wonderful people who recue precious little girls like me.
