Arrival Story: My husband bought Bear for a dear elderly friend of his in May 2001. When Tony died on October 8, 2007, we inherited Bear. He had never been to the vet, never had ANY of his shots, except for what he got at the breeder's as a newborn, and had never eaten dog food, except for what he got at the breeder's as a newborn. He'd always had people food. When he came to us, we were able to get him all his shots and microchipped for a grand total of $24. We got him chipped and his rabies shot at a clinic sponsored by our local ASPCA, and I bought his 8-in-1 shot at a reputable pet shop and administered it. His teeth were green, rotting, and broken. He was infested with fleas. He was not housebroken, even though he'd only lived inside with Tony as a companion. Tony loved him, but his income wouldn't allow for the expense of caring for a dog. I didn't realize how little care Bear was getting. We put him on a high-quality dog food right away. People said he'd starve before he'd eat dog food. I'm here to tell you that when Bear got hungry enough, he was happy to eat the dog food and loves it now. He gets plain white rice as a treat about once a week. We shaved him completely naked, except for his whiskers, bathed him, and dipped him. He is flea-free now and his skin is healing nicely. His teeth are much better and his gums are a healthy pink again. He is now crate-trained at night and stays outside most of the day, weather permitting. He's gained a pound or two and is a very happy dog now.

Bio: Bear is shaved in this pic because when we got him, he was in bad shape with fleas and matted hair. The best solution was to shave him and start over.
Bear crossed the Rainbow Bridge earlier this summer. We were sad to see him go. He grieved himself to death missing the only owner he'd ever known for 8 years. RIP Bear.
