Hi, I am Brisco and I am adopted. Here is my story. My mama and fursister Kayla adopted me from the Michigan Capital Area Humane Society after the sudden death of their rescue pup Vegas on Thanksgiving day 2008. They needed a big personality to fill his shoes and luckily they found me!!! I came to Michigan through the Tennessee Rescue Wagon in November 2008.
I was crate phobic and had severe separation anxiety, even though I had my fursister Kayla to keep me company during the day. Mama was very patient and replaced many cell phone chargers, lamps, shoes, toilet brushes, rugs, socks, and stuffed toys.
But that's not the adoption story I want to tell you about. My real story started on March 8, 2010, when Mama let us in after begging to go out at 3:00 am. I returned home with a dislocated and fractured hip. Wish I could tell Mama what happened, but it was not a car incident as the doctors said my injury was not consistent with a car hit.
Mama rushed me to Michigan State University Emergency Vet Teaching Hospital and I had to stay three long days and endure two difficult and lengthy surgeries. The first surgery was to fix a left hip dislocation and fractured ball joint. The second surgery was to remove that ball joint after the hip continued to dislocate. They could not do a successful hip joint replacement.
It's 43 days later and I am healing and in physical therapy twice a week at MSU's Canine Rehabilitation Center where I have stretching sessions, water therapy, jacuzzi (woof!!!) and massages on my hip and lower back to ensure the muscles are healing properly. I am learning to walk (and hopefully run and jump!) normally without a hip joint. Mama did not have insurance on us furkids when my accident happened, but she sure does now!!
Many people told Mama just to "put me down" because she has spent over $6000 (and counting) of her savings on my care and recovery. They told her she was crazy to spend that kind of money on a mutt-pound dog and she could have gotten several purebreds for that amount of money. They told her I was only 18 months old and it was not like she has had me a long time and she would get over it. They asked her to think of all the things she could have spent that $6000 on.
Mama did think about all the things she could have spent the money on and do you know what it was? She told me she spent her money on PUPPY KISSES!! Mama tells me over and over that my puppy kisses are worth every penny!!
Mama also tells me she chose me as well as me choosing her that day in November at the Humane Society. She says I am her sweet "Little B" and there is no way she could not provide me with the best medical care to fix my hip.
I am very proud of my mama. She knows that animals are not throwaways - even if they become hurt and need specialized (and expensive) medical care. My mama would not trade me for the world and I am very, very thankful she was the one who adopted a scared, tired, anxious puppy from Tennessee on that very cold Michigan day in November.
