Arrival Story:
I am a Foster Mom for the Humane Society. I took Darla in when she was still pregnant. Our shelter (a no-kill shelter) brought her down from a shelter in central Fl where there was a chance that she could have been euthanized. She had her puppies here in my house, I stayed up until 3 in the morning helping & reassuring her. She did pretty good for being a first time Mom. Darla had 8 puppies of which 6 survived. She is so little I can't believe all those puppies were inside of her! She is a very good girl. She does have some issues that we are working on. This is what I think -basically for all of her 1 year of life she was left in someones back yard. No one played with her (she is learning how to play), no one taught her how to walk on a leash, no one house trained her, no one socialized her. So I think she kept escaping, she can jump AMAZING heights! Then she got pregnant and they finally got fed up enough to surrender her.

Bio:
So in my house (can we say zoo) Darla is being exposed to visitors (slowly), my kids ages 2 1/2, 5 & 6, my animals: Doberman, Chihuahua, old cat & 2 kittens, and birds. She has been OK with things like hairdryers, coffee grinder, dishwasher -the TV did scare her at first. She looked at it like it was going to attack her. She is experiencing Christmas with a real tree, decorations and all the chaos (while nursing 6 puppies) I think she is doing pretty good. She does good when I take the trash out. She has surprised me, she does very well with a lot of things that normally scare an outside only dog. She does OK with my husband (he went VERY slow with her) but other men are a no-no for now. I think she was abused by a man (or older boys). But when her puppies are all adopted and gone, her personality will change a lot. i can do anything with her, bath her, giver her meds, take her food while she is eating, take her puppies etc. She trusts me. So anyone who wants to adopt her would just have to go slow and build trust. She would be best suited for a household with older children, better yet a couple or single household. No small animals (she is a Terrier!). While she is OK with my 18 year old cat, she always wants to chase the kittens and we constantly have to watch her. I would not recommend her to a household with rodent type pets. If it's small and moves fast, she will chase it! The only food aggression I have seen is between her & my dogs. If she is eating and they come near she will growl at them, that's it. She will need to be adopted through the Humane Society Naples http://www.collierhumanesoc.org/si te/PageServer?pagename=HSCCAdoptio nCenter her adoption fee is $250, this includes her spaying (after pups are weaned) all her shots, 3 months of heartguard. I believe they are also going to be cleaning her teeth while she is under for the spay.
