Arrival Story: A friend of mine who volunteers with a local pit bull rescue group my husband and I once fostered for sent out an email about a pittie who was very thin and sickly and living in an elderly lady's backyard. She was desperate to get Rusty out of that town because pit bulls are banned in that county. He was doomed to be picked up by animal control and euthanized by the end of the week (this is the time frame given by the old lady who was throwing food out for him). The end of the week came, but no one offered to help poor Rusty. He had a couple of hours left at best. She lives about 3 hours away from me, but my husband and I called her and said we could take him. He was very sick when we got him. He barely moved for the first two weeks we had him, but after his medicine made him all better, he was good to go! Now he is playful, bouncy and very sweet. He has been updated on all his shots, neutered and is on heartworm preventative. All he needs now is a forever home and a family to call his own.

Bio: Rusty is great with other dogs and cats. He is wonderful with children, but just remember that sometimes doggies can have hyper moments, so very small children could get knocked down. He doesn't always pay attention when he is jumping around happily waiting for someone to play. He's never shown a single sign of aggression to anyone he meets. In fact, I couldn't promise he'd ever make a good guard dog. We take him to the park, to Petsmart, and to relatives' houses where he gets lots of exposure to various other dogs, cats, and kids.
Whatever happened to him in his past has caused him to flinch away sometimes when you try to pet him. He seems to always anticipate a beating which is heartbreaking to see, but he is getting so much better. He is also crate-trained and mostly house-broken. He knows to potty outside, but he hasn't quite figured out how to tell you he needs to go out. If you let him out on a consistent schedule, he is usually fine. He has never had an accident in his crate. He knows "Sit" and "crate" (which means if you point to his crate and say "crate", he will go get in it on his own). He does not like to be alone, so if you live in an apartment or condo, I recommend that you only consider Rusty if you have another dog. He is fine if either a family member or at least one other dog is with him, but if he is alone, he will sometimes cry in his crate. Otherwise, he is quiet and content to be in his crate (unless he needs to go out, of course).
He does pull on his leash a bit, but we are using an anti-pull harness which seems to be helping with that alot. He LOVES to go out and meet people. He is VERY fond of soft beds or blankets and really hates sleeping on hard floors. He aims to please, and while he can be very playful, he can also come lay down with you while you watch t.v. or read, especially if you provide a chew toy. His best friend was another foster dog we cared for named Sonata, but she was recently adopted. Now he is waiting for someone to come and take him to his forever home, too.
