Arrival Story:
I was driving to a friend's house when I spied out of the corner of my eye, a small dog crossing a busy three lane avenue. I turned around after a few blocks out of concern for the dog. I parked and walked to the median and asked some bus passengers if they had seen the black dog. They informed me that he was on the bus and wouldn't get off. I stepped onto the bus and sure enough, he was laying down by a vent, chilling out. He snarled at me so I got a rope leash out of my car and lured him down with Cheez-its (I think), put him in my car and was off with him in tow.
Bio:
Jack has Canine Addison's Disease which occurs when a dog's adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones and other chemicals that help regulate many bodily functions, such as metabolism, blood pressure and stress response. While it is not contagious, it is not fully understood why dogs develop Addison's. The most likely cause is genetic; however, other possible causes include infections, immune system disorders and trauma. It is difficult to diagnose because in blood panels, it closely resembles kidney failure so he spent almost two weeks in the hospital before it CAD was suggested and once he received treatment (synthetic hormones) he responded positively. His medical care is arduous because stress can tip his balances causing him to get sick and hten we have to tweak his meds and check bloodwork. All in all, very costly first dog... and yes, I would do it again if the cost was quadrupled!!!
