Arrival Story:
In January of 2008, I was driving back from hiking on one of the many beaches in a remote area on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. Far down the road, I saw what I thought to be one of the large hogs run across. Slowing down, I found that the 'hog' was actually a very emaciated dog, somewhat looking like a pit bull. I pulled over to the side of the road and parked. Though not looking like the happiest and most friendly dog in the world, she stood staring at me from the other side of the road. A few seconds later, a older native Hawaiian pulled behind me. He informed me that he cleaned up the beaches down where I was at and that the dog had been lingering around for around two weeks, but growled at him when he tried to approach her. I told him I was going to try and see if she would let me offer her some food or water and he kindly gave me a jug of water and wished me good luck, saying that she looked like she was in need of some serious help. And she did. Ears bitten and torn up, fur missing and paws so swollen they were completely pink and one eye barely open, she stood watching me as I crossed the road. Cautiously, I approached her slowly, offering a hand without staring directly at her, she sniffed it and took a step closer. Not a growl or hackle up, she just watched me as I looked at her. I bent down slowly while talking to her and poured a bit of water out as an offering. She took a step back. Sitting down, I placed the water next to me. Once I sat, she lifted her head a bit and with a thoughtful look, walked over and sat down, leaning her back against mine. Looking directly into my eyes, they said "you wouldn't believe the day I'm having". From there, a friendship began. From our first stop together at Mc Donalds (hey, the girl needed to eat!) to the Hawaiian Humane Society and finally the plane ride home to the continental states, Lacie has proved to the be greatest animal I have ever befriended. Loving, goofy and horribly playful, we are guessing she is somewhere between 4-6 years old. Found at a deathly 29lbs, she is now nearly 80lbs at her full weight. She is still working through various health problems but is overcoming them quickly and with a vigor that most people can never fathom of possessing.
