Last night we had to let Zeus go to where he is no longer sick. It was the hardest thing I have had to do in 7 1/2 years. I know he is no longer sick but the hurt a family feels is unexplainable. We have his best friend Riley, a black lab with us still. My husband says no more dogs since the hurt is so much when you loose them. I have to look back to when we lost our first dog, Holly, after 14 1/2 years. We cried for what seemed like forever. She has been gone now almost 8 years and memories of her still make us laugh and smile. So is the 7 1/2 years of love and memories worth the hurt...absolutely.

We are very saddened as Zeus has been diagnosed with Lymphoma. It started approximately 3-4 weeks ago when he was not interested in eating. We did some internet research and found that middle aged dogs sometimes change their tastes and eating habbits. We changed his food and we was good for a bit, and then the same behavior occurred. We noticed him throwing up small amounts here and there, but nothing consistent on a daily basis. When the vomiting became more persistent we took him to the emergency vet who diagnosed him with an intestinal infection. He was treated with Flagyl and Pepcid. A couple days later we noticed two huge lymph nodes under his chin. He went back to the vet and was told it was probably cancer. He was scheduled for a biopsy the following day. We ended up taking him back to the emergency clinic which is an incredible animal hospital under the care of Dr. John Ross. He was started on Prednisone and surprisingly has done very well. We thought we were just buying a short time and then would have to make a final decision. We have now considered chemotherapy which could lengthen his life for up to a year, or as short as 6 months, no guarantee. We are so torn and have spent the last week crying over him. He is like a child to us, as many dogs are to their owners. Next post will have more on our decision.
