Best Tricks: He thinks he is a Circus Dog. He loves Agility traing and riding on the back of my ATV, especially if we get a little "squirrelly".
Arrival Story: An old miner who had had a stroke and was living in an assisted living private home called me and wanted me to help him STEAL this dog from his neighbor. He explained that the dog had been tied to a 10 foot lead on a tree and had been since he was a tiny pup. Mikey was digging holes around his tree, and the man who owned him had put nails and staples in boards and buried them where he was digging, so Mikey would cut his feet and stop digging. The man who owned him at the time was also quite elderly, and had a touch of dementia.
I told my friend that I would not steal him, but I would take him off his hands with permission. If he would not surrender the dog to me, then we needed to call the police. (Please note we lived in a very rural and isolated area and it would have been days or even weeks before the Sheriff's Dept. would respond on a dog case.) My friend made up a plan to invite the old guy to my house for a 4th of July Bar-b-q. I asked him to bring the dog to play with my other dog, because she was lonely. (HA!) ( Unfortunately, I lost custody of "Sissy" in my recent divorce. Mikey misses her a lot.)
The dinner went as my friend had planned. He fed the old guy and gave him a few beers and marveled at how much fun Mikey was having playing with my Newfoundland/ St. Bernard mix, "Sissy". The old guy started talking about what an awful dog Mikey was and I asked him if I could have him. He said "Sure, but you will be sorry!". That day began a wonderful love affair between Mikey and I.
Bio: Mikey, as you can imagine, did, and still does, have some issues. He had had no training. Within days he had learned basic commands such as sit, and lay down. He seemed to be naturally house trained, other than occasion attempting to mark. ( How do you stop that?) It took over a year for him to fetch a ball and bring it back to me. He was very scared of anything you would pick up and throw, because he had been beaten, and had rocks thrown at him.
He had a huge ditrust of men, which is better now. He doesn't automatically go defensive anymore. He has learned that it's ok for people to come inside the fence. I can take him for long walks downtown and most of the time, if he is on his leash, he doesn't react adversly to people or animals. He heels and walks very well. He is learning to do it without the leash being on, tho I think the leash is a security thing for him. He loves kids and other animals, and has a couple of girl friends that come and play with him on nearly a daily basis. He has come a very long way. I adore him and he adores me. He is my little Buddy Love.
