Arrival Story:
When we were looking into getting a dog we did a couple of those online personality tests to see what dog was most compatible with us and our lifestyle. Havanese was high up the list of suggestions in both cases, so the next time there was a dog show in town we went to meet some Havanese "in the fur." We were smitten! The next problem was finding a breeder that wasn't a puppy mill who would let us have a pup from one their precious litters. It looked as if we were going to have to travel/fly somewhere as far a field as Canada to get a Havanese when we lucked out. Patti noticed on a Northern CA Havanese mail list someone taking about their breeder from Petaluma. She begged for contact information and as luck would have it the breeder's dogs had just had their second, and what would be, final litter. The parents were from good stock and we got invited to meet the breeder, parents and litter when the puppies were just 5 weeks old. As we were the first to commit and express interest we got the pick of from the litter of 5: 3 girls and 2 boys - all parti colored like their Mom and Dad. This was a really hard as by the time we had to choose we had met the litter twice and they were all displaying different personalities. I, Martin, wanted a boy and Patti, my wife, wanted a girl but as it was my first ever dog Patti allowed me to choose. Babalu was, at that time called Bubba as he was the biggest of the litter. Babalu was suggested by a fellow poet friend of Patti's and comes from I Love Lucy, the name of Ricky Ricardo's Club Babalu, and as Ricky was from Cuba, too, the name seemed perfect. Babalu is the perfect city dog. Like many Havanese, he's smart, funny, playful, friendly and just the joy of our lives. He's got a lot of energy and loves to go on lots of walks and to run around the house with our cat. He's not so small that he is delicate but he's small enough to fly in the cabin on the plane with us. He loves to be included in everything that we do and hates to be left behind if we go out. He doesn't shed and, even though we keep him in a puppy cut, his coat takes a little effort everyday to look after. (Not so much now that he's grown into his adult coat.) He makes us smile many times everyday and we cannot imagine life without our Babalu. On the few occasions we have had to leave him with friends while we were traveling our bed seems so empty without Babalu to share it with us. It's just sickening how much he is loved....

Bio:
Sung to Baba (mostly) each morning since he was a pup: "Good morning to you. You're my puppy stew. You're cute and you're fluffy. You look like a stuffy. You're my Babalu. I love you so true. I love you so sweetly. I love you completely. Good morning to you. Good morning to you. You are my sweet Baba. I love you like java. Good morning to you. Good morning to you. Good Morning."

Oh, NO, not AGAIN!

Mom doesn't know I overheard her talking to a friend--I have to go in for surgery this Monday morning because I hurt my other knee a couple of weeks ago playing with my kid brother, Desi.

I'm SO bummed. I was just feeling back to my old self and my hair was growing-in super shaggy. (Desi and I were having a race to see who could grow their hair out the longest.)

NOW, take a look at me, I'm naked as a spring-shorn lamb!

And I've heard Cesar Milan on the TV say dogs live in the moment. But that's not really true. I remember what the last surgery felt like; waking up in that place in a fuzzy haze, the smells of antiseptic and suffering, the pained barking and whining for home. It's not a place any dog wants to go back to, never mind ME!

But I suppose it's to late too run away. And where would I go, how would I survive? I do way, way back in my memory...recall a circus. That's odd. Alas, I could never leave mom...or dad, or Desi.

So, even though I can't tell time. Let's get this metaphorical CLOCK going!

8 weeks? Bah! That's Nothing!

And Thanksgiving is such a good deadline to shoot for. Turkey and pumpkin smells filling the house. And friends just about to press the doorbell. It's that time of year when there's a crisp chill in the air and a clear-as-a-bell sky. Dad will be hustling in the kitchen singing badly to the Bare Naked Ladies on the stereo and mom will be upstairs in the bedroom getting ready last minute, as per usual.

And me? I will be at the top of the stairs anxious to run down on my OWN four legs, while Desi barks for me at the foot of the stairs wanting me to HURRY up, "Let's go play outside before everyone arrives!"

And I will be ready to finally. I swear it! I will...I will.

Baba's having his OTHER knee operated on this coming Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. and we are just devastated. We're beyond tears, financial concerns, plain old anxiety and just want Baba to be out of pain.

Every time he cries out I can't take it. I don't have kids. He IS my baby. When he hurts, I hurt. Come Tuesday, he's going to hurt ALOT worse, but he's going to be on the lonnnng slow, road to recovery. He'll hate us, but he'll forgive us. And we'll have Thanksgiving to look forward to. That's 8 weeks from now. So when you ask us--and I hope you will. I'll just keep telling you, "Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving."

And by Xmas? Our Xmas present will HOPEFULLY be Baba playing off-leash, "look ma' no hands" with Desi. Lord knows we won't have any cash left for actual presents...hee hee!

Baba is a much-loved, EXPENSIVE pooch, but he is my heart. When I know Martin thinks HE is!

With a heavy sigh,
Patti

Gosh...you wouldn't believe it--SURGERY!

My POOR knee! I blew out my already damaged ACL ligament in my right rear knee and had to have TPLO surgery to fix it. After much research my mom and dad decided to take me to an excellent surgeon at VSA (Veterinary Surgical Associates) in San Mateo. It was a ROUGH first couple of weeks, especially waking up alone after surgery and the overnight stay in the hospital without my mom there to comfort me. Boy, was I ever sore and glad to get home!

Anyway, it's been 5 weeks this Wednesday and I'm itching to run around and play with Desi, my kid step-brother, but mom's got me cooped up in a crate or strapped to a chair leg with a leash, so I can't have ANY fun! SIGH!

But mom finished remodeling her backyard and is hanging out there with me and it's verrrry relaxing, so it's not so bad, considering my most FAVORITE place to be in the WHOLE wide world is right beside my mom.

More updates later!

Woof,
Baba
