Arrival Story:
As soon as Molly Moncure saw the picture of the disabled puppy in the email she received, she knew she had to help. Molly is the founder of Southern Cross German Shepherd Rescue in Georgia, and every day her inbox is filled with stories about dogs needing help. But there was something so special about this pup, only 6 months old, who had trouble standing. He was in a shelter in South Carolina that could only hold him three days before they would euthanize him. With his physical disability, he was not a candidate for adoption. The shelter had no idea what was wrong, only that he had problems getting up and walking, and that his spine appeared abnormal. At the same time, Joanne Leicester saw his plight posted to a web board. This is how Atticus ended up in North Carolina and the Veterinary College there for a while.

Bio:
Initial assessment at NC indicated that Atticus has had some severe trauma which has damaged his spine. At the moment, Atticus gets around with an endearing kangaroo hop and does not seem to be in pain. Do not let that fool you. Atticus is a very fast runner!! The neurology team at College of Veterinary Medicines Veterinary Teaching Hospital in NC examined Atticus, and believed that decompressing and stabilizing his spine would provide him the best chance, although it was possible that Atticus would eventually become paralyzed. This operation, was to be followed by a regimen of strengthening his muscles, which may have helped to delay a dramatic deterioration in his condition. Dr. _____ was to perform surgery on Atticus on Dec 2. Medical costs for Atticus were estimated at $6500 just for the diagnostics and surgery, but Molly did not let that deter them. Once you commit to a rescue dog, you owe him the best possible care. And that is what Atticus is going to get. This is the reason Molly felt so strongly about getting a second opinion. This is when Atticus came to Georgia to stay with Molly and go to the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. Once at UGA, a team of Drs. reviewed all of the test results from NC. UGA's opinion was a much different one than the one in NC. UGA thought the surgery would do much more harm than good for Atticus at this time. UGA believed there is no reason that Atticus cannot also have a reasonable quality of life despite his disability. Atticus has continued to grow stronger with each day. He got the necessary excercise to built his muscle and is enjoying life to the fullest. Molly fell so in love with Atticus and decide to just adopt him herself. They are all living a happy life on top of a mountain in North GA. I am happy to say..I am this beautiful sweet dogs second mom!!!

Update on Atticus

Atticus was neutered nearly a month ago and the days following his neuter were very scary - he could not walk when I brought him home from the Vet's and he had lost control of his bowels. No one really knew what to expect but Atticus has slowly over the last few weeks regained nearly all of the mobility he lost from being under anesthesia. He loves to be outside and will lay in the sunshine "guarding" his home for hours. Atticus is very much a big goofy puppy and continues to do well.

Thank you to everyone that has held him in their hearts and prayers!

This is from my foster mom Molly:

Atticus wants to say a huge "Thank You" to the wonderful people at Dogster, Emma's Christmas Paws Project, that sent him his first ever Christmas Stocking full of wonderful presents! He is having a ball playing with the toys today - so much so that I think he may be over doing it a bit but he is having a ton of fun.
Thank you all so much for caring about this sweet boy!

I do love them so much!! Thank you for making me feel so special. I love you Emma!!
