All I want for Christmas ... is some help for stray animals

COLUMBIAVILLE — In the true spirit of Christmas giving, Megan Semaan wrote out her Christmas list, and asked for money ... for someone else.

“My sister Jill asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I told her the only thing I wanted was for her to donate money in my name to the Lapeer County Animal Shelter,” Megan said. “She donated $50 in my name to them.”

She was inspired by trainers Connie Croley and Annette Tindall of Competitive Dog Sports in Columbiaville. “(They have) devoted their lives to saving animals and that has had a huge impact on me,” Megan said. “They have both taught me everything about dog training that I know now.”

“Megan started on her own thinking about trying to help the animals, but my husband and I try to be supportive of her efforts,” said Megan’s mom, Kim. “We are both very proud of her.”

Megan, a 14-year-old homeschooler, has been passionate about animals all her life.

Volunteering at the Animal Shelter, 2396 W. Genesee St. in Lapeer, isn’t allowed, so she’s been finding other ways to help.

“Before, the dogs used to lay on wire bars in the cages ... until they are adopted or euthanized,” Megan said. “I called around to a few places that make rubber mats for kennels and I found a place in Wisconsin called Linear Rubber Products.”

Linear Rubber Products gave Megan a $400 discount, so she got mats for all the dogs for just $100. “(The mats) were delivered directly to the shelter a few weeks before Christmas,” she said.

Pet Supplies Plus in Lapeer also donated dog and cat food for all ages of animals, and “even treats for the animals,” Megan said.

“I hope to continue doing whatever I can, and would someday like to see (the Lapeer County Animal Shelter) be a no-kill shelter, and perhaps even have better kennels or even runs for the animals.”

Megan also hopes that some day the shelter will allow people to volunteer. “If more people would get involved and maybe go without ‘the next best thing’ so that an animal can have a fresh start in life, that would make a world of difference.”

“If people would do as little as donate a bag of dog food to the shelter, or some bleach, that would be wonderful; anything is appreciated at the shelter, and it makes an animal’s life a little better,” she said.

“I hope that this might impact people in some way, after reading this, and they will go out and help the animals.”

More about Megan Semaan:
Megan has been dancing since she was 6 years old at Autumn’s Dance Studio in Otisville. She has studied tap, ballet and jazz, as well as a little bit of hip-hop.

She trains her dogs in competitive dog sports, including Rally-O, obedience, K-9 freestyle, flyball, high jumping and agility. She has three border collie/whippet mix dogs, all rescued.

Her favorite subject in school is math.

She wants to be an emergency veterinary technician, a dog trainer and would like to continue dancing. “I hope to open an animal rescue group when I am older,” she said. “And continue doing whatever I can to save animals and improve the quality of their life.”

I love my family, I really like little kids,
I enjoy sitting next to mom on the sofa watching a movie,
I really like to sit next to her bed in the morning and wait for her to wake up then kiss her in the face!
I am such a lucky dog, there are a lot of homeless animals sitting in shelters right now, and 99.9% of them wont live to see another day.
if more people would get their dogs fixed and buy shelter dogs and not dogs from breeders or stop breeding dogs, life would be a lot better for a lot of animals. I really am blessed.

I love running around with mommy and playin toys with her,
one thing I like is making people smile. I am a loving dog and just want to please my people.

Burr, it has been getting cold outside!
My mom made me winter clothes so I dont get cold this winter.
My mom likes to sew stuff and give them to peoples dogs so they can all be nice and warm this winter.

But I can't say I hate snow. My mom always makes me a flyball run in the yard out of the snow :)

My mom made me flyball in the snow,
she made 4 jumps and a box and she put a ball on the box and I played flyball in the middle of winter outside, it was good and hard snow so it worked out great!

And
Last year when it was snowing I went outside to eat the snow as it was coming down, and soon there was a few feet of snow in the yard and my mom let me outside to play in the snow and I ran around with my head in the snow lol, it was fun, every dog must try it some day.
