Leave a bone for Winnie (In loving memory)

Nicknames:
Queen Winnifred Grace III, The Dairy Queen, Winnie Wonkers

Quick Bio:
-purebred-three legger-dog rescue

Likes:
Winnie thinks it's good to be Queen. She likes being in charge of her Castle in the Burg, seeing that things are running smoothly, and keeping track of Polly, Lydia, and the 4 cats. She loves riding anywhere in the Big Silver Crate .

Pet-Peeves:
The Queen is displeased when anyone tries to encroach on her Throne (couch, loveseat, pillow, blanket, dog bed). And you can't convince her she's not going for a ride.

Favorite Toy:
Inanimate objects pale in comparison to something edible!

Favorite Food:
She's become accustomed to steak every morning, and getting her many pills and supplements in canned cat food.

Favorite Walk:
Across every street, down every sidewalk, around each corner. And the best walk---to The Big Silver Crate (Hyundai Elantra station wagon) to go for a ride!

Best Tricks:
Navigating our 23 outside steps on 3 legs.

Arrival Story:
We foster for Going Home Greyhounds, and Winnie was our third "foster failure". She was a perfect fit, and we couldn't bear to let her go.

Bio:
Winnie raced (very fast) at Dairyland Park in Kenosha Wisconsin. Her racing name was Sudden Wink. In June 2004, our proud and beautiful Queen was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). In July, her right hind leg was amputated. She is a strong and stoic dog, and has adjusted very well to life on 3 legs. We chose not to do chemo, and are treating her with diet change, vitamins, and supplements. We're not sure how long we will have her with us, but we cherish every day, as she faces each new challenge with typical grace and courage. She's an inspiration to everyone who knows and loves her. Sadly, on October 1st, 2007, we had to let our precious Queen go. She had been going downhill ever so slightly for about a month, not something alarming, but she wasn't as eager to go for rides or walks, and wasn't eating as well. Our vet thought it could be her teeth again, and so when she started antibiotics, she seemed to do better. But a few days later, she was unable to go up or down our steps, and she refused to eat. The bloodwork showed that she was in kidney failure. Though it broke our hearts, we let Winnie go with the dignity and peace that she so deserved. She would want everyone to know that she fought the good fight, and she beat the monster! Queen Winnie will remain an inspiration to everyone who knew her, and to those who gained hope in their fight against cancer. She was stubborn, independent, quirky, complex and courageous. She was so very precious to us, and I have no doubt that she is now ruling in the Kingdom at the Bridge. We miss you, sweet girl. Run fast and free on all four legs. Love, Mom, Dad, Polly, Lydia, and Tess
