Arrival Story: This is Ken, Amanda's boyfriend and Spencer's co-owner.
Spencer was found wandering on the median of a highway in Indiana. Thankfully, the people who found him belonged to a wonderful dog-rescue organization. He weighed fifty-five pounds (twenty-five underweight) and was covered in burrs. He had buckshot underneath his skin and an infected, abscessed canine tooth, as well as a fungal infection in his ears and paws and intestinal parasites. Worst of all, he had a bad heartworm infection. Spencer's rescuers took him home, washed, him, fed him, and rescue vets extracted the abscessed tooth (neutering him while he was under) before beginning the arduous heartworm treatment.
Thankfully, Spencer survived heartworm treatment and his rescuers, who love him dearly, reluctantly put him up for adoption. Amanda found him the same way she found me: The Internet. One look, and she knew she'd found the right dog . We drove fifteen hours from New York to Ohio just to pick him up.
He proved to be a wonderful, wonderful dog. He was shy and always well-behaved and friendly. People always stopped us on the street to tell us how beautiful he was. More than that, he had a good heart.

Bio: On December 1, 2004, at 4 PM, Ken got a hysterical phone call from Amanda. Spencer had gotten away from her and ran into the street, where he was hit and killed by a car before her eyes. She held his furry body and tried breathing life back into his muzzle, but it was too late. They literally had to pull her off his corpse in the veterinary hospital, and all she can do today is lie on the bed in the fetal position, clutching his red squeaky toy and moaning, "I want my doggy back." Ken immediately rented a car and sped up to Massachusets and held her while we both cried and shook.
Spencer is survived by two heartbroken humans. Ken wishes he had died instead of Spencer.
