Leave a bone for Buster (In loving memory)

Nicknames:
Buster Rooney, Rooney Tune, Chief of Protocol for Male Hounds in the Kingdom of the Square Table on the Dewey Beach Message Board

Quick Bio:
-purebred-dog rescue

Likes:
Buster loves his Mom and Dad, his big red bed, and his ladyhound, Molly By Golly

Pet-Peeves:
Thunderstorms and fireworks scare him. He doesn't like being cold, so he has a whole wardrobe of coats. And he'd rather be called by his middle name, Rooney.

Favorite Toy:
Whatever his brother Nick is playing with.

Favorite Food:
He loves everything!

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere, and right back home---there's no place like home!

Best Tricks:
Buster is a talented painter. We create paw paintings with our dogs and fosters, and he's done some beautiful work!

Arrival Story:
We foster for Going Home Greyhounds, and Buster's former owner had to "get rid of him immediately" because she was moving. She brought him to our house to foster. She said he didn't like men and children, but we thought that was an exaggeration, because he seemed to love my husband. We soon discovered that yes, he really didn't like men and children. He would back off and growl. We worked on this, introducing him gradually to lots of people, and he seemed to be making some progress, but we knew he wouldn't get a home by growling at prospective adoptors. So we held him back from several adoption days, all the while becoming more attached to him, but not ready to admit it. We finally decided we would take him to an adoption day and let fate take it's course---as attached as we sometimes get to our fosters, we can't keep them all, we have to let them go to their forever homes! We said that if Buster got adopted, that was great, but if he didn't, he was meant to be with us. Well, guess what? Our sweet old guy didn't get a home, and we finally admitted that WE were his forever home. We like to say that he knew he was home when he walked in our door, it just took us 4 months to realize it!

Bio:
Buster raced at Mile High and Cloverleaf in Colorado (racing name Wix Jarmon). He was 7 years old when he came to us, and had been in 2 homes. A shy and sensitive homebody, he has really blossomed in the 4 years he has been with us. When we started taking him to Greyhound gatherings in Gettysburg and Dewey Beach Delaware, he decided that the big world wasn't so scary after all, and now he loves to travel in the Big Silver Crate with the other 3 Greyhounds. Small, noisy kids still scare him a little. But his issues with men have pretty much disappeared. Sadly.....on Monday, March 28th, 2005, we lost our precious Buster Rooney. Two weeks earlier, his right hind leg had suddenly become paralyzed, and he was in a great deal of pain. After a trip to the emergency vets, and 3 days at our own vet, he regained use of the leg. The vets thought a piece of cartilage had broken loose and entered the bloodstream of the spinal cord, but a tumor or bad infection were also possibilities. After a week, he went downhill so rapidly, losing weight alarmingly, and I knew that something else was involved, probably a tumor near the spinal cord. Then he refused to eat. We couldn't bear to see him in pain, and it was so important that he left us with the quiet dignity that he brought to our family for over 4 years. He was a complex soul, tender and insecure at the core, but also just a silly, goofy boy. He tried so hard to be brave, and many times succeeded. He was brave at the end, safe and unafraid in our arms. He's now running free with Lacey and Patsy at the Bridge, looking down on us, and waiting patiently till we're together again. We love you, Rooney.
