Arrival Story:
A niece had been bugging me to find her a dog. She prefers a shih tzu. I went to the internet to get an idea on how much a shih tzu puppy costs. I selected two ads from the photos, one is very near my place while the second is very near my niece's house. I inquired from both via telephone and after I talked to the sellers, both of whom are not breeders but simply owners of pet dogs, I sent a text message to my niece asking her to contact the one near her place while I will go see the other one near my place. The one near my place belongs to a couple with two small children. They have a male and female shih tzus who accidentally mated before they turned 1 year old. They produced 3 female puppies and 2 males, including Errol. I did not realize it then that they are all quite small for shih tzus, probably because they are offsprings of underage dogs. They are all active and adorable, except for Errol who, I realized later, is the runt of the litter. He hid under the sofa and wouldn't come out. I know nothing about shih tzus or how to choose puppies. I chose Errol not because of his personality but because of his color. Again, not knowing anything, I chose the one with the most white. Later I found out that the colors of the others, unbroken patches of mahogany, are the ones to choose. In my eyes, Errol's color is more beautiful. When I tried to contact my niece, she wouldn't answer her phone. I waited 30 minutes and when I couldn't talk to her, I took the risk of buying Errol for her. I brought him home when he was only 2 1/2 months old. Errol came cheap because he couldn't be registered and because he was a runt. Secretly, I fell in love with Errol immediately and wish to keep him for myself. Fortunately, when my niece visited the other puppy ad, she fell in love with Taby. Even if I was not sure I wanted a dog, I was ecstatic to have Errol for myself. Errol started my fascination for dogs.

Bio:
When I first had Errol, he wouldn't eat and wouldn't play. He was very shy and fearful he was always hiding under the sofa. His soft silky hair was always in tangles and he has allergies in his tiny body. I was at the vet two days in a row in his first three days with me. I badger the poor vet a couple more times by telephone after I just got home from her clinic. After a few days, Errol began to eat a little and play a little. He was such a quiet little mouse it will be another month before I hear his first bark. Then he gradually became attached to me and began following me wherever I go. When I had to go to the toilet, he would be waiting by the door waiting for me to come out. When I had to leave the house to work, my father told me Errol would spend his days sleeping under the sofa, waiting for me. And he remained weak, I was always at the verge of losing him. He eats so little and he would vomit out the little that he ate. His poop is firm this time and soft next time. I keep changing his food in search of what will work. I was always at the internet finding ways to get him eat and how to take care of him better. It was the vet's suggestion that I find another puppy to be his playmate. So I got Sabrina, very active, very playful, very aggressive and feisty girl. Errol competed with her when I praise her for eating, he would out-eat her. When I play with Sabrina, Errol will vie for my attention and play with me harder. But he always has health issues. Once, when he wouldn't eat again, I made the mistake of putting a little corned beef on his feed to entice him to eat. He ate, but what a big mistake. Something in the corned beef made him sick. He had diarrhea so bad, I had to confine him to an animal hospital for eight days, on iv fluid. I was sure I was losing him that time. It was Sabrina who gave me comfort. I was always laughing at her antics, amidst my misery about Errol's condition. Errol got well. But when he was released from the hospital, his hair fell in solid mass, I had to have him shaved. There is this miserable picture of him after his release from the hospital, which I posted here. Then, a miracle. I found the food that suits him. I began to fed him this food called Canidae, which is very rare in the Philippines. This is the only food he was able to tolerate, his poop became consistently firm. He also began to play, roughly wrestling with Sabrina. His hair is gradually growing again but for some reason, the new growth is curly. Nonetheless, he was healthier than he has ever been. Meanwhile, I got Sabrina's brother, Shamu, and then Trishie (another story). Sabrina suddenly passed away last Christmas of 2008 (still another story, a sad sad one) Errol recently celebrated his first birthday, healthy, playful and very active.
